The end of a legacy – Subaru Legacy sedan to be discontinued after 2025

The Subaru Legacy sedan will see the end of its… legacy come 2025, as Subaru has announced that one of its popular sedans will be discontinued by 2025. The announcement ends the 36-year… legacy of the Subaru sedan, which first debuted in 1989 and will end production in Spring 2025.

The announcement was made by Subaru of America on April 23, 2024. In the statement, the company said, “Though the Legacy is the longest-running Subaru model line, its discontinuation reflects market shifts from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers and Subaru’s transition to electrified and fully electric vehicles.”

Subaru had previously announced that it will introduce eight new electric vehicle (EV) models by 2028. Thus the departure of the Legacy sedan will make way for these electric-powered Subarus. Currently available in Subaru’s fully electric lineup is the Subaru Solterra, which shares the same underpinnings as the Toyota bZ4x and the Lexus RZ.

Recapping the history of the discontinued Subaru Legacy in its media statement, Subaru of America recalls how the Subaru Legacy was designed for the American market and how it became the first Subaru manufactured in the United States at Subaru’s then-new plant in Indiana. Subaru of America also claims that over 94% of Subaru vehicles sold today are still being driven on the roads of America today.

Previously sold in Malaysia, the Legacy was also available in markets like Australia. With its dwindling demand, it still retained its presence in America, although, that has also now been announced to come to an end.

The Legacy sedan also saw an outback/estate derivation, previously known as the Legacy Outback, although it is now only known as the Outback. Subaru’s only sedan offering after the Subaru Legacy is discontinued will be the Subaru WRX.
