Gallery: Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV 500 4Matic – the electric E’s final form

The Mercedes-Benz EQE350+ has always felt a little… incomplete to us. Its styling is a little middle of the road (though admittedly looks are subjective), and its EV specifications also aren’t exactly attractive – especially for its price. The EQE SUV 500 4Matic, though, it feels as though this is what Mercedes-Benz always had in mind when they made the EQE.

It starts from its design; the divisive “one-bow” silhouette certainly works better on an SUV body style, and the EQE SUV 500 4Matic here in Malaysia also gets all the bells and whistles when it comes to the exterior trims, including the “EQ Signature grille” panel with mini three-pointed stars, the light bar connecting the headlights in front, a full AMG Line body kit, as well as a classy set of 21-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels.

But more than just looks, the EQE SUV is also better equipped compared to its sedan counterpart. It still doesn’t have the fancy Hyperscreen setup inside as its elder EQS siblings do, but the open-pore magnolia wood trims do look significantly more upmarket than the satin black surface of the EQE350+, and it also gets a big panoramic glass roof for an even more premium ambiance inside.

There’s also the more potent powertrain, as the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV 500 4Matic comes with a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup that delivers 408 hp (300 kW) and 858 Nm of twist to the ground, sufficient to propel the 2,560 kg behemoth from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds – a significant improvement over the sedan’s 6.4 seconds.

A set of Airmatic air suspensions and continuously adjustable ADS+ dampers help manage the EQE SUV’s weight around the corners, while the rear-axle steering of up to 10 degrees helps with manoeuvrability around city streets – both of which are not available on the sedan.

The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV 500 4Matic is juiced by the same 90.6 kWh battery pack as its the EQE350+ sedan, which in this configuration, gives the SUV up to 552 km of range (WLTP). Crucially, though, it charges way faster than the sedan on AC power, courtesy of its 22 kW on-board charger – only the second model in Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s line-up to come with the faster charger.

DC charging is supported up to 170 kW, the same as the EQE350+ sedan, taking approximately 32 minutes to charge from 10-80%, or an additional 250 km of range in just 15 minutes of charging.

Sure, it is quite a bit more expensive than the sedan at RM485,888 (on-the-road without insurance), but we think the added kit more than justifies the price hike.
