MoT launches e-Dereg system for online deregistration of vehicles – no need to be at JPJ counter

The Ministry of Transport (MoT) today introduced its new ”e-Dereg” online system initiative which aims to expedite the process of disposing of vehicles in Malaysia. “e-Dereg” is the shortened name which refers to the “Online Motor Vehicles De-Registration System). The main types of vehicles concerned are those that are no longer in use, permanently damaged, no longer road-worthy, or beyond economic repair.

One of the main motivations for the initiative is the surge in old and abandoned vehicles in housing areas that have become a problem for respective local authorities. According to the Ministry of Transport (MoT), one reason old/abandoned vehicle owners do not dispose of their vehicles properly is the complex process of doing so – thus the introduction of the e-Dereg system.

The introduction of the e-Dereg system omits the need for vehicle owners to complete the deregistration process face-to-face at the respective JPJ counters. The MoT says that this initiative has taken time to develop as a holistic ecosystem had to be built first. This involves the deregistration process as well as the development of vehicle disposal sites that comply with safety and environmental regulations.

To ensure safety and environmental compliance, the disposal of the vehicles has to be done at any Authorised Automotive Treat Facility (AATF) that has been licensed by the Environmental Department (JAS). The first JAS-licensed AATF in Malaysia is Car Medic Sdn Bhd in Bandar Teknologi Kajang, Semenyih. There is also already a similar facility in Shah Alam. 10 licences have been issued and another 8 facilities have yet to be opened by other private operators.

Officiating the event was MoT Minister, Anthony Loke Siew Fook. In his speech, he encouraged vehicle insurance companies to dispose of concerned vehicles through JAS-licensed AATF centres in Malaysia.

During the event, the disposal process of vehicles was also demonstrated by Car Medic Sdn Bhd. In a process spanning 1 hour, the vehicle is drained of its fluids, salvaged for usable parts, and finally demolished. All waste materials are disposed of safely.

Currently, vehicle owners looking to dispose of their vehicles can do so through Car Medic Sdn Bhd at 1A, Jalan P4/7, Bandar Teknologi Kajang, 43500 Semenyih, Selangor. They can be contacted at 03-89207555 or [email protected].
