Video: Are EVs the only way for the future? Toyota doesn’t think so

In the age of full-on battery electrification of vehicles, Toyota is the one company that is headstrong on maintaining its multi-pathway approach towards carbon neutrality. Just recently, the company held its Beyond Zero event in Bukit Jalil. Being curious about alternative approaches towards achieving a carbon-neutral future, we checked it out for ourselves.

Toyota’s mult-pathway strategy involves several alternative powertrains for the average vehicle of today. This includes hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen combustion engines, hybrid cars, plug-in hybrid cars, as well as battery-electric vehicles. Toyota took this opportunity to display each of the multi-pathway strategies at this event. Watch our video for a virtual experience of this exhibition.

The biggest exhibitions at the Beyond Zero event had to be its hydrogen fuel cell ecosystem which included hydrogen generators, hydrogen filling stations, a hydrogen fuel cell bus, a hydrogen Toyota GranAce, as well as a hydrogen fuel cell Toyota Hilux. Besides using hydrogen for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, Toyota also exhibited hydrogen combustion engines which was showcased via the Toyota Corolla Cross H2 Concept.

While full-on battery electric vehicles are at the forefront of what is deemed to be the future of personal mobility, Toyota isn’t going in a 100% on that just yet. Instead, it believes that hybrid vehicles are the better option to encourage cleaner vehicles among the average petrol car owner. Among the hybrid vehicles displayed at the event were the Innova Zenix Hybrid, Corolla Cross Hybrid, Alhpard Hybrid, Vellfire Hybrid, and the latest-generation Camry Hybrid.

The most visually stunning exhibit would be the Toyota Prius 24H Le Mans Centennial GR Edition which was basically the first debut of the fifth-generation Toyota Prius in Malaysia. With the latest-gen Prius called the best-looking one ever, we couldn’t help but fawn over this “GR-ified” version of it. Get a good look at it by following us on this virtual tour.
