Toyota Hilux facelift unveiled, 2.8L diesel with 48V hybrid assistance

A new facelift for the Toyota Hilux has been unveiled in Australia, with the pickup truck now featuring a 48V mild hybrid system. It is the same mild hybrid 2.8L diesel powertrain that was revealed to the world back in December 2023.

The facelift introduces a new front end to the Hilux along with several technology updates. There is a new set of headlights, a new front bumper, and a new grille. The wheels as well as most of everything else carried over from the pre-facelift version.

For the Australian market, the 48-Volt mild hybrid system is standard on the 4×4 Rogue and automatic SR5 double cabs, and optional for 4×4 SR double cabs. Toyota says that it has helped to improve engine smoothness and fuel economy of the 2.8-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine by approximately 6% to 10% (depending on variant) compared to the current generation Hilux.

The 48-Volt system comprises a motor generator, 48-Volt battery, and DC/DC converter which enables a stop/start system as well as enhancing driveability and fuel efficiency while reducing noise, vibration, and harshness. The hybrid system makes 204 hp and 500 Nm. The electric motor in its own is rated at 16 hp and 65 Nm.

There is also a new two-arm belt tensioner and a stronger belt material which contributes to providing a quieter ride and better driving experience. The Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V is also compatible with HVO100 diesel, a non-fossil fuel made from 100% renewable sources.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said, “Introducing 48-Volt technology on double-cab HiLux models is an exciting step forward, improving fuel efficiency while still providing performance and capability that the HiLux is known for. Combined with dynamic styling and improved specification, the HiLux range has never looked more appealing.”
