The Mazda CX-70 is a RWD 5-seater SUV: inline-6 engine, MHEV, PHEV

Mazda has unveiled the Mazda CX-70, a brand-new SUV positioned between the brand’s CX-60 and the CX-90. Essentially a five-seater version of the seven-seater CX-90, the CX-70 sits on the same SkyActiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture.

On the outside, the CX-70 looks closely similar to the CX-90 too, albeit with a sportier styling, featuring an array of gloss black bits, rather than chrome on its larger sibling. This includes the black mesh grille, blacked-out side mirrors, door handles, and roof rails. Also fitted is a set of 21-inch dual-tone aluminium wheels.

Mazda has also given the Mazda CX-70 new front and rear bumpers that are different from the ones found on the CX-90. The new SUV sports a front bumper that features larger simulated grilles that lead to the air curtain generators in the corners. There is a set of faux vents found on the rear bumper as well.

Performance-wise, the Mazda CX-70 can be had with two powertrain options. The first of the two is Mazda’s e-SkyActiv G 3.3 48V mild hybrid system which consists of a 3.3-litre straight-six turbocharged engine, paired with the brand’s M Hybrid Boost system, and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Mazda hasn’t announced performance figures for its new CX-70 yet, but the SUV is said to come with two power output options, according to Car and Driver. The base version will put out 284 hp (metric), while the S version of the same powertrain makes 345 hp (metric).

The other powertrain available with the Mazda CX-70 is the SkyActiv PHEV Plug-in Hybrid system, which sports a 2.5-litre inline-four petrol engine with an electric motor. No official power figures have been announced for this powertrain option either, but referring to the numbers of the CX-60 and CX-90 that also feature the same powertrain, the output is rated at 327 hp (metric) and 500 Nm. Power can be sent to either the rear wheels only or all four wheels for both powertrains.

Also included with the Mazda CX-70 is a Trailer Hitch View with a viewfinder that guides the driver when hitching up a trailer. The CX-70’s towing capacity is rated at up to 5,000 pounds (2268 kg).

Inside, the CX-70 will also look familiar if you’ve seen the CX-90 before, albeit with five seats instead of seven. The SUV can be had with several upholstery colour options, including Burgundy.

The Mazda CX-70 is also the first Mazda model to include Amazon Alexa integration in the infotainment system. This enables users to control certain functions using voice control, including climate controls and the infotainment system. syncs up with Amazon-capable in-home equipment.

On the safety front, the Mazda CX-70 is equipped with Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS) Unresponsive Driver Support. When activated, the driver is alerted incrementally whenever the system detects the driver’s eyes are closed or distracted and also when the driver’s hands are off the steering wheel.

If the driver does not respond, the system slows down and stops the vehicle, attempting to avoid an accident or mitigate any damage should an accident occur.
