Proton sold 154,611 cars in 2023, up 9.3% from 2022

Last year, local carmaker Proton closed 2023 with a total of 154,611 cars sold (domestic + export) in the year, showing a 9.3% growth from 2022. In December alone, the company sold 12,711 cars.

Proton’s overall market share is calculated to be 19.4% on the back of a second record-setting year for a total industry volume of an estimated 794,948 units, approximately 10.3% more than the previous year. As a result, Proton also ended the year ranked second in overall sales, which is also the fifth year in a row it has maintained its position in the standings.

Topping Proton’s yearly sales chart is, as usual, the Proton Saga with 70,184 units sold. It is followed by the X50 with 31,829 units, the Persona with 24,362 units, the X70 with 11,200 units, the Iriz with 7,639 units, the X90 with 4,815 units, the Exora with 4,473 units, and the newly-introduced S70 with 109 units.

Proton Chief Executive Officer, Dr Li Chunrong said, “2023 was another record-setting year for the automotive industry as total sales surged by 10.3% over the previous volume high set just twelve months earlier. Factors such as the fulfilment of orders for tax-free cars up till the end of March no doubt fuelled the volume increase in the first quarter of the year, but it was also an active year for car launches with minimal disruptions caused by parts shortages.”
