Proton’s 1.6L CamPro CFE engine ends production, CamPro VVT left as brand’s final homegrown mill

Proton has ended production of its homegrown 1.6-litre CamPro CFE turbocharged engine. This is according to a TikTok video posted by Exora Owners Car Club Malaysia, which shows the final units of the engine rolling off the carmaker’s manufacturing line.

The 1.6-litre 4-cylinder CamPro CFE, also known as the Charged Fuel Efficiency engine is Proton’s turbocharged first homegrown engine. It was first launched in 2008, powering the then-new Proton Exora Bold. Just in case you didn’t know, Proton will also be retiring its Exora MPV by the end of this year.

Besides the Proton Exora, the CamPro CFE engine also powered other discontinued Proton models such as the Prevé and its hatchback sibling, the Suprima S. The engine is paired with the VT3 version of the Belgian-sourced Punch CVT gearbox and makes a total of 138 hp and 205 Nm.

However, we’re not completely saying goodbye to Proton’s CamPro engine family just yet, as the Proton Persona, Iriz, and Saga, which are all still on sale today are still powered by Proton’s naturally aspirated 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre CamPro VVT (stands for variable valve timing) engines.

The only question left to ask is how long more will the CamPro VVT engine continue to live on? Only Proton knows the answer, as research and development on the CamPro engine ended back in 2021.

Prior to the birth of the more modern CamPro CFE and CamPro VVT engine, Proton also made different variations and iterations of the Campro engine that powered various of its models in the past. This includes the CamPro CPS (stands for cam profile switching), as well as the CamPro IAFM (stands for intake air-fuel module) and IAFM+ engines.

Currently, Proton is also in charge of assembling the Geely-sourced 1.5-litre TGDi 3-cylinder engine, which powers various Proton models including the Proton X50 and X70 SUVs. The larger Proton X90 also uses the same engine but is hybridised thanks to the addition of a Belt Starter Generator.
