The Hot Wheels Proton Saga die-cast is not limited-edition, but good luck buying one

Hot Wheels has announced that the highly-awaited Proton Saga 1:64 die-cast model is now available at “major departmental, toy specialty [sic], or convenience stores near you”. The model is included as a basic car in the 2024 Hot Wheels Dash B (B Case) series, and thus not a limited-edition model – but good luck buying one at its regular RM9.90 price, as scalpers have seemingly already started doing scalper things.

The Hot Wheels Proton Saga has already been listed as high as RM250 each on several e-commerce platforms in Malaysia, despite the actual special edition model – featuring a blister card design by nine-year-old Saw Jane Harn from Penang – only going on sale next year. The current version in the Dash B series will be exported and sold worldwide.

Mattel Malaysia probably knew that it’ll be difficult for us normal folks to get our hands on one, and as such they’ll also be holding live unboxing sessions for the Hot Wheels Proton Saga die-cast model at Pavilion Bukit Jalil for fans to bask in the excitement too. The next scheduled event will take place on October 14 at 5pm, and October 15 at 10am.

The Hot Wheels Proton Saga die-cast was first announced last year, in conjunction with Mattel Malaysia’s 40th anniversary celebrations. The company already operates the largest Hot Wheels manufacturing facility in Penang, but it further expanded the plant back in January this year to increase its production capacity by 20%, up to “over half a billion” Hot Wheels cars per year by 2025.
