Proton records 28.6% sales jump in 1H 2023 – 14,351 units sold in June

Proton has published its sales report for June 2023, in which it delivered a total of 14,351 units (inclusive of domestic and export sales). With that, the company has delivered a total of 77,321 units in the first half of 2023 (1H 2023), translating to an increase of 28.6% over the same period last year.

The national carmaker claims that the figure essentially outpaces total sales growth for the industry by “more than three times”. Year-to-date market share has also increased to 21.3%, representing a 3.2% increase over 1H 2022.

Leading Proton’s sales chart in June was once again the Saga, which retook the lead for the best-selling A-segment sedans with 6,111 units sold. Cumulatively, the Proton Saga saw a total of 33,325 units sold thus far this year, marking the model’s best performance since 2012.

This is followed by Proton X50 with 2,449 units sold, the Persona with 2,254 units, and the X70 with 1,245 units. The Proton X50 continues to be the best-selling B-segment SUV, as well as the best-selling SUV overall in Malaysia, while the Proton Persona retook the lead for the B-segment sedans.

The Proton X90, which was only launched here in Malaysia in May, also saw an impressive showing for its first full month on sale by recording a total of 1,082 units sold, vaulting it straight to the top of the D-segment SUV category.

As Proton’s first new energy vehicle (NEV), the positive sales results should bode well for the national carmaker’s electrification plans in the future. Proton has previously committed to launching “at least” one new NEV model per year.

Commenting on the sales performance, Proton Edar’s Chief Executive Officer, Roslan Abdullah said, “Proton’s performance in the first half of 2023 is noteworthy as we achieved our best start to a year since 2012 and are also on track for fifth consecutive year of sales growth. The numbers show demand for our products remain strong despite projections of a reduction in liquidity for consumers, and this is proven by our growth rate.”

“For the second half of the year, Proton is confident we have the products and promotional strategies in place to continue our growth trajectory. We will also execute our plans to update our range, launch our entry into the Malaysian EV market with PRO-NET and further improve the quality of our products via investments announced this year to improve our production capabilities,” he added.
