With the second running of the GR Vios Sprint Cup now concluded, UMW Toyota Motors has announced the launch of its new sim racing championship, now rebranded as the Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR) GT Cup Malaysia.
Now in its sixth consecutive year running, the 2023 Toyota GR GT Cup will offer up to RM90,500 in cash prizes – the highest ever in the series’ history, making it one of the most lucrative sim racing events in the country. Additionally, the winner of the tournament will also represent Malaysia in the GT Cup Asia Pacific Regional Qualifier and race against some of Asia’s best to secure a spot at the Global Finals.
First held in 2018, the GR GT Cup Malaysia sim racing tournament (previously the GR Velocity Esports Chamipionship) has attracted more than 900 participants annually.
New for the 2023 instalment, UMW Toyota will be introducing simulator racing experiences at universities across Malaysia to encourage a greater participation of youths, as part of the company’s mission to contribute to the growth of motorsports in Malaysia.
Multiple stopovers have been planned leading up to the start of the qualifiers, including UNITAR, UiTM Pasir Gudang, UiTM Shah Alam, INTI Subang, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Sunway University, and INTI Penang.

“The momentum and the level of interest for virtual racing have grown tremendously and is a boost for both e-sports and motorsports here in Malaysia. We are proud to be able to support this platform of motor racing,” said UMW Toyota Motor President, Datuk Ravindran K.
The qualifying stage for the Toyota GR GT Cup 2023 will begin on July 15, 2023, where the top 20 fastest drivers will qualify for the semi-finals and subsequently the top 10 drivers will move on to the finale. A grand finale event will be held at Sunway Pyramid from 18-20 August, starting with the Quarterfinals round, for drivers to battle it out in person in front of a cheering crowd.
