In Malaysia, our choices for electric cars comprise of several European choices, and several Chinese choices, but not many Japanese choices. Soon to be made available in Malaysia is the fully electric Toyota bZ4X. Prices and specifications of the bZ4X for the Malaysian market have yet to be confirmed.

UMW Toyota Motor has registered several units of the Toyota bZ4X in Malaysia for technical evaluation and market research purposes. And luckily for us, we were invited to see the fully electric Toyota up close at the UMW Toyota Motor headquarters in Shah Alam. Are you looking forward to this fully electric Japanese car? Watch our video to get a thorough look at the Toyota bZ4X.

The bZ4X is the first of Toyota’s “bZ” series which is the brand’s range of fully electric cars. There’s also the bZ3 sedan, but it is a China-exclusive offering. The bZ4X is an SUV that’s about the size of a Toyota RAV4, albeit with a sportier roofline. The bZ4X has Subaru and Lexus counterparts, namely the Subaru Solterra and the Lexus RZ.

The specifications of the bZ4X for Malaysia have yet to be confirmed, but we do know that the bZ4X is offered with two powertrain options globally. One is a single-motor front-wheel drive (FWD) powertrain while the other is a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain. The units on display at the UMW Toyota Motor headquarters are single-motor FWD versions.

The single-motor FWD Toyota bZ4X produces 204 hp and 266 Nm of torque and does 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. With a battery capacity of 71.4 kWh, the Toyota bZ4X can carry you as far as 516 km (WLTP).

The dual-motor AWD version makes 218 hp and 337 Nm. The century sprint is completed in 6.9 seconds. It uses the same 71.4-kWh battery as the FWD version, so the range is a bit less at 461 km (WLTP).

When the all-electric crossover runs out of juice, it can be charged at a maximum rate of 6.6 kW (AC) or 150 kW (DC). The latter can juice the car up from 0 to 80% in 30 minutes. Toyota also assures that the battery will still have 90% of its storage capacity after 10 years.

The Toyota bZ4X will soon be officially available in Malaysia and we’re curious to see how well it will perform in the Malaysian market. Want to know more about this Japanese electric car? Watch our video to find out more.
