Among the many new electric cars available in Malaysia, few can be deemed as both affordable and practical. The BYD Atto 3 is one of them, costing RM149,800 for the Standard range and RM167,800 for the extended range. Having driven several electric cars, we highly recommend the Extended Range.
The Atto 3’s look is not distinctive, yet it is pleasing to the eyes. The small SUV has sleek proportions and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb, except for the “Build Your Dreams” lettering on the tailgate. What is it like to live with? Powering the BYD Atto 3 is a single electric motor that makes 203 hp and 310 Nm. All power is sent to the front wheels and the Atto 3 does the century sprint in 7.3 seconds. It isn’t the fastest electric car out there but it is still able to provide the typical ‘EV excitement’ if you’re coming from a regular internal combustion engine (ICE) car.
As for battery and range, the BYD Attoo3 Standard Range comes with a 49.92 kWh battery pack that provides 410 km of range (NEDC). The Atto 3 Extended Range comes with a 60.48 kWh battery that provides 480 km of range (NEDC) or 420 km (WLTP). In terms of range, the Atto 3 is a practical electric car that would allow you to make most long-distance journeys easily.
To charge, the Atto 3 Standard Range can handle a maximum rate of 70 kW for DC charging. The Atto 3 Extended range can handle a maximum charging rate of 80 kW with DC fast charging. No official charging times are listed by BYD. As for AC charging, both the Standard Range and Extended Range can handle a maximum rate of 7 kW as they can only do single-phase charging. One interesting feature of the Atto 3 is the Vehicle-to-load (V2L) function.
