As part of the brand’s revamp here in Malaysia, Chery is working on introducing the Omoda 5 and key models under the Tiggo Pro series in the short term. Besides that, Chery is also developing a new nationwide sales and after-sales network to serve Malaysian customers, with more details set to be announced in the near future.

If you’re unfamiliar with the brand, Chery has previously brought in vehicles like the Tiggo SUV, as well as the Eaststar Maxime MPVs.

In the Tiggo Pro series are several models that could provide serious competition to existing Proton cars if priced correctly. The Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo 7 Pro could directly compete with the Proton X50 and Proton X70 respectively. Also in the Tiggo Pro series is the Tiggo 8 Pro which could compete with the upcoming rumoured Proton X90.

While Chery makes its CKD plans for Malaysia, the brand is also making moves in our neighbouring country, Indonesia. Already invited to discuss on EV investment plans in Indonesia, Chery and Indonesia are in talks to build a production and manufacturing base in Indonesia for new energy vehicles, which will integrate research and development, manufacturing, and sales.

In a statement released by the Chinese carmaker, Chery International Executive Vice President Zhang Shengshan Mr Zhang reiterated the importance of the Southeast Asian market in the firm’s further globalisation plans, with Indonesia and Malaysia being the key regions – the former for having the largest economy and population in ASEAN.
