Honda HR-V, Proton X50 rival Chery Omoda 5 SUV goes on sale in China – Malaysia next!

The Omada 5, the first model sold under Chery’s new Omoda product series has officially gone on sale in China. So far, the internal combustion version of the Omoda 5 has been confirmed for Malaysia and will rival the likes of the Proton X50, Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross. Malaysia is set to become the first country outside of China to welcome the crossover.

Chery Automobile Co. Ltd., Deputy General Manager and General Manager of Marketing, Jia Yaquan highlighted that the Omoda 5 has been designed with the youth in mind, and through its technology-rich features, aims to project a new, more vibrant Chery product to global consumers.

The Omoda 5 is fitted with a 1.6 TGDI engine paired to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, delivering 197 hp and 290 Nm to drive the front wheels. 0 to 100 km/h takes 7.8 seconds but that’s not all, as it comes with four different driving modes including Eco, Normal, Sport and Super Sport. Interestingly, in Super Sport mode, both driver and occupants would be treated to a “professionally-tuned simulated soundtrack”, complemented with the ambient lighting turning yellow.

Inside, the Omoda 5 is fitted with dual 12.3-inch displays that incorporate the instrument cluster and infotainment system, much like the current batch of Mercedes-Benz and BMW vehicles. Audio entertainment is provided by a Sony sound system and together with a 64-colour ‘rhythmic’ ambient lighting system, offers an immersive audio-visual entertainment.

Recently, Chery Malaysia had also taken to Facebook to gauge the public’s interest in the Omoda 5 EV, with questions on what the public thinks about the SUV’s interior and exterior. Let them know what you think here!
