Video: 2022 Proton Saga facelift MC2, 5 Things

Proton has just unveiled the 2022 Saga facelift, the second major change exercise for the third-generation entry-level sedan. It’s a smaller update than the first facelift update in 2019, but there are still a handful of new creature comfort feature additions to bring the Saga up to par with the modern times.

On the outside, the “facelift” update is mild to say the least, with the only changes across the board being the new Proton roundel emblem, blacked-out wing mirrors, and a red strip underneath the grille that the carmaker calls “Ethereal Bow”.

The newly-added Premium S variant adds a new bodykit consisting of a front bumper extension and side skirts, alongside a set of redesigned 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels for the two higher-end variants. But what it lacks in terms of visual pizzazz, it makes up in equipment.

New to the 2022 Proton Saga facelift, specifically for the range-topping Premium S variant, is a new keyless-entry and push-start system, as well as an external rear boot release button underneath the new blacked number-plate trim. The wing mirrors are also powered on the range-topper, and also comes with an auto fold feature when you lock and unlock the car.

Inside, the centre stack on the dashboard has been updated with a new air-conditioning control panel and reworked layout, while the air vents, steering wheel, and instrument cluster also get new red accents to add a dash of aggression.

On the higher-end variants, the seven-inch touchscreen infotainment display has also been updated with new graphics. Meanwhile, the range-topping Premium S variant also gets new semi-leatherette seats, plus a leatherette steering wheel.

Mechanically, the 2022 Proton Saga facelift remains unchanged from before. Underneath the bonnet is still the same 1.3-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine, sending 95 hp and 120 Nm of torque to the front wheels via a four-speed automatic gearbox.

The 2022 Proton Saga facelift is now on sale, starting at RM34,400 for the entry-level 1.3 Standard MT, and tops out at RM44,300 for the range-topping 1.3 Premium S AT variant. Prices are inclusive of the sales-tax exemptions valid until 30 June, as well as a five-year/150,000 km warranty and three times free labour service.
