2019 Facelifted Proton Saga now comes with a 4-speed AT, from RM32,800

Finally, it’s time for Malaysia’s best-selling sedan to receive the magic touch. Lo and behold, the 2019 facelifted Proton Saga, the latest member of the Proton’s current line up to be refreshed with an updated exterior, new features as well as a new 4-speed automatic transmission.

On the outside, the refreshed Saga gains new visual cues as the Iriz and Persona. For starters it now gets an Infinite Weave front grille, new front bumper with jewel-like LED daytime running lights (Premium variant only), 15-inch five twin-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in 185/55 profile rubbers (Standard variant gets 14-inch items with 185/60 profile tyres), new rear bumper, integrated rear spoiler as well as PROTON inscription across the rear trunk.

Inside, the 2019 Saga features a new fabric upholstery for the seats, new centre console panel, sun visors with ticket holder, new instrument cluster with LCD multi-info display as well as remote trunk release across all variants.

Going with the Standard (AT) and Premium, it adds on a new headliner with foldable assist grip, LED map lights as well as 2 USB charging ports. However, only the top of the range Premium variant gets the new 7.0-inch floating touchscreen infotainment with smartphone connectivity, reverse camera, four speakers (Standard gets two) and steering wheel audio switches.

Unfortunately, the Saga’s fancy new floating infotainment screen does not support GKUI voice command nor online connectivity. You won’t be able to wow your friends with the “Hi Proton” function in the Saga.

Under the hood rests the same 1.3-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder VVT engine developing 95 hp and 120 Nm of torque paired to either an automatic or 5-speed manual option. Purists will be glad to know that Proton has ditched the Punch-sourced CVT for a Hyundai-sourced 4-speed torque converter. The new gearbox also comes with a new layout P-R-N-D-S instead of P-R-N-D-3-2 layout on older Sagas.

Safety wise, the Saga gets dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX mounting points. Only on the 1.3 Premium variant features Electronic Stability Control, Hill Hold Assist and Front Parking Sensors.

There are five exterior colours to choose from – Snow White, Armour Silver, Jet Grey, Rosewood Maroon and Ruby Red. Every purchase also comes with a 5-Years/150,000 km Warranty and 3 times Free Labour Service.
