Alongside the launch of the Arteon R-Line and Tiguan Allspace R-Line yesterday, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) also previewed the Passat R-Line as part of the VW Tour roadshow, completing the “R-Line Trinity” as the company calls it.

Positioned at the top of the Passat model range, the locally-assembled Passat R-Line is now available for booking, with pricing expected to be between RM200,000 to RM210,000, placing it right in between the Passat Elegance and Arteon R-Line.

Taking inspiration from the full-blown Volkswagen R models, the Passat R-Line features several additional sporty exterior touches, including R-Line front and rear bumpers, side R-Line emblems, additional chrome trims which wraps around the entire vehicle near the skirtings, as well as 19-inch “Verona” alloy wheels.

On the inside, the sportier Passat gets new R-Line specific trims, including a thicker flat-bottom steering wheel, Nappa “carbon-style” black leather seats, and aluminium sports pedals.

Otherwise, the equipment list is pretty much a carbon copy of the Passat Elegance, which includes the 11.7-inch digital instrument cluster display, 9.2-inch Discover Pro touchscreen infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and App-Connect, tri-zone automatic climate control, as well as 14-way power adjustable front seats with memory and massage function for the driver.

The powerplant under the hood is also unchanged from the Elegance – a 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged engine pushing out 190 hp and 320 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a new seven-speed wet dual-clutch DSG gearbox.

The R-Line does however come as standard with the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) driving mode selector with up to 15 selectable increments for the five driving modes (Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Individual), as well as Electronic Differential Lock (XDS) which can help control understeer, resulting in a sportier driving experience.

Just like the Elegance, the Passat R-Line once again misses out on autonomous emergency braking functionalities. Standard safety equipment list includes six airbags, Anti Brake-locking System (ABS) with Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Side Assist with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring System, and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

The Passat R-Line will be offered in six exterior colour choices: Aquamarine Blue Metallic, Tamarind Brown Metallic, Manganese Grey Metallic, Reflex Silver Metallic; Deep Black Pearl, and Oryx White Pearl.

Interested to check out the car in person? The Volkswagen Passat R-Line will be on display at 1 Utama Shopping Centre this weekend as part of the Volkswagen Tour campaign. Bookings and viewing arrangements can also be made online, or at authorised Volkswagen dealerships nationwide.
