The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States has conferred the highest, TOP SAFETY PICK+ award to the 2017/18 Mercedes-Benz GLC for its good ratings in all of IIHS’s crashworthiness tests.

It is the first time the GLC, since the 2016 model, has been put through all of IIHS’ evaluations. The year before, it also scored a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. To receive the award, a vehicle must score good rating in five crashworthiness tests which covers the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, the vehicle’s sides, roof strength and head restraints.

It will also need to score either an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and have a good or acceptable headlight rating. The GLC’s standard front crash prevention system earned a superior rating as it avoided collisions in IIHS track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph while its LED headlights earned a good rating.

Ever since the locally-assembled GLC 250 4MATIC was made available, it instantly became the brand’s best selling mid-sized SUV model in 2016, with 1,421 units sold in just four months.
