Toyota Corolla is 2015 world’s best-selling compact car [+Video]

The Toyota Corolla has once again conquered the compact car world in 2015 with a cumulative sales of 1.27 million units. This is also the most Corollas Toyota has sold in the history of the model!

For the uninitiated, the compact car (for the United States) and small family car (for the UK) are commonly referred to as C-segment cars in this region. Such examples cars within this segment include the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, Mazda3, Honda Civic and of course the Toyota Corolla.

The Corolla, famous for its reliability, continues to dominate the global small family car sales chart with over 1.27 million units delivered throughout 2015 alone. Its market share improved by 0.6 percent compared to 2014. Playing second fiddle to the Corolla is a car which just turned 40 years old last year – the Volkswagen Golf – with a total of 1,024,000 sales. That’s impressive given the fact the Volkswagen’s brand was tarnished by last year’s dieselgate scandal.

The Ford Focus meanwhile slipped 20 percent, falling down one place to third with 804,942 cars sold. Sales figures have also declined for the Hyundai Elantra, Volkswagen Jetta, Chevrolet Cruze and Honda Civic, but they still remain in the top 10 list below:2016-compact-carsales

Meanwhile, the Mazda3 (which we think is one of the best C-segment cars on sale in Malaysia) took eighth place with 448,804 units sold, a 15 percent jump compared to 2014. In the premium segment, Audi took home the crown jewel after outselling the BMW 1-Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class, thanks to the hot-selling A3 model with 349,901 cars sold. It’s also the only premium car in the entire top 10 list!

The Honda City also deserves some mention here following its unprecedented success in Malaysia last year, which helped secure 12th placing with 286,179 cars sold. Ironically, the City is categorised as a sub-B segment car in Malaysia, but its dimension and space could really put a typical C-segment car to shame.Mazda3 2.0 SkyActiv Hatchback review by AutoBuzz.my

Closer to home, UMW Toyota has been offering the eleventh-generation Corolla (known as the Corolla Altis) since 2014. The thing is, we’re unable to determine if the Toyota Corolla Altis is the most popular C-segment car in Malaysia, since the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) would not reveal data of model sales to be made public (only overall numbers are revealed to the public).
