Zeekr considers tackling the rugged off-road SUV market

It looks like we might see Zeekr unveiling a rugged off-roader or a pickup truck, according to Zeekr Vice President Mars Chen, speaking to Drive.

Chen also hinted that the fledgling carmaker is currently conducting research into the market, noting that the brand remains open to all vehicle types, provided they meet criteria on how disruptive they can be.

“But for now, it is just a discussion. You know, we want to redefine every single segment. Once we identify the segment, Zeekr will check how disruptive we can be if we enter,” said Chen.

“So pickup, MPV [people mover], which we have already done, even the roadster. We are just five years old. So in the coming years, we have the curiosity.”

Should Zeekr develop a rugged off-road SUV, Chen stated that the company will create something entirely different if it really goes for it, adding that any future models must have global appeal rather than targeting single markets.

“If we cannot create enough differentiation [through a box-style SUV], of course we will not just follow or replicate. Every model needs to be global. It makes no sense to customise just for one country. Even China,” he added.

These revelations suggest that Zeekr is currently toying with the idea of building a rugged off-road SUV infused with its own signature style. We could expect the brand’s usual ultra-luxury trimmings alongside the mind-boggling outputs seen in the Zeekr 8X and 9X. Those models are capable of over 1,000 hp, a figure that would sound absolutely insane if translated into a pickup truck.

This exploration is likely driven by the current status quo in China, where rival brands like Denza and YangWang are flooding the market with premium rugged options. Models like the Denza B8 and the YangWang U8 have raised the stakes, with the U8 famously known for its ability to literally float on water and even propel itself through it.

Perhaps Zeekr truly believes the 9X deserves a more utilitarian, mud-slinging sibling capable of the same amphibious party tricks with the same amount of opulent trimmings. For now, however, the reality of a rugged Zeekr rests entirely inside the boardroom in Hangzhou.
