After having launched in Thailand over a year ago, the Isuzu D-Max in Malaysia is finally getting the 2.2-litre MaxForce turbo diesel engine. Announced via the company’s Facebook page, the new 2026 Isuzu D-Max is now open for registration of interest (ROI).
The new 2.2-litre MaxForce engine (RZ4F-TC) will replace the existing 1.9-litre BluePower turbo diesel (RZ4E-TC), which it is based on.
A larger displacement isn’t the only revision Isuzu has made. The new engine features redesigned cylinders for improved oil flow, along with high-swirl cylinder heads for cleaner combustion. It is also paired with an electronic variable geometry turbocharger, as well as new high-pressure direct injectors, low-friction pistons, and a revised electronic control unit (ECU).
The result is 163 hp and 400 Nm of torque, delivered between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm — a gain of 13 hp and 50 Nm over the 1.9-litre unit. This puts it closer to the 3.0-litre turbo diesel, which produces 190 hp and 450 Nm. Based on Thailand’s model lineup, that engine will likely continue to be reserved for higher-end variants.

Paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, the company boasts a 10.7 % drop in extra-urban fuel consumption. Of course, the pickup truck will continue to be available with a six-speed manual transmission.
Currently, the Isuzu D-Max is available in nine different variants. Six of those variants are of the outgoing 1.9-litre diesel mil. The D-Max is available from RM92,199 for the Low Ride 1.9L 4X2 MT to RM161,938 for the flagship X-Terrain 3.0L 4X4 AT on the road and without insurance.

Entry-level variants such as the Low Ride — available exclusively with the 1.9-litre engine — and the Single Cab are offered with either the 1.9-litre or 3.0-litre powertrains. In their most basic form, these variants are geared towards a wide range of commercial uses.
Step up to the Standard, and things become noticeably more refined, with LED headlights, upgraded alloy wheels, and a more comfortable interior featuring modern screens and leather upholstery. From here, the range expands to include the Auto Plus, Premium, Premium V-Cross, and the range-topping X-Terrain, which comes fully equipped with all the bells and whistles.
While Thailand has already received a mild-hybrid (MHEV) version of the D-Max, its arrival here has not been confirmed. It would certainly be an interesting addition if it does make it to our market.
