XPeng G6 gains new REEV powertrain in China – up to 1,704 km range

Following the debut of its first range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) with the XPeng X9, XPeng is quickly expanding the lineup with its second REEV model, the newly launched XPeng G6 Power X in China. The move broadens the appeal of one of its most popular SUVs while addressing range anxiety for buyers not yet ready to go fully electric.

Similar to the XPeng X9 Power X, the XPeng G6 Power X is equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 204 hp (150 kW). However, the engine functions solely as a generator motor and does not drive the wheels, making this a series-hybrid setup.

The generated energy is stored in a 55.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which powers a rear-mounted electric motor producing 296 hp (218 kW) — exactly the same motor as the battery electric (BEV) model in China.

The G6 Power X also retains XPeng’s 800V architecture with 5C charging (“C” refers to how many times the battery’s capacity can be charged in an hour). According to XPeng, this allows the battery to gain up to 314 km of range in just 12 minutes under ideal conditions. The company quotes an electric-only range of 430 km under the CLTC test cycle, while the total combined range is rated at a whopping to 1,704 km.

Along with its powertrain changes, the XPeng G6 Power X also features the company’s second-generation VLA (Vision-Language-Action) AI system, delivering up to 2,250 trillion operations per second (TOPS) of computing power.

The system enables a suite of active safety features, including automatic emergency braking (AEB) and automatic emergency steering (AES) support at speeds of up to 130 km/h, as well as tyre blowout stability control at speeds of up to 180 km/h.

During the global announcement of VLA AI 2.0 last week, the technology was also described as being capable of supporting fully autonomous driving in the future. According to XPeng Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) He Xiaopeng, deployment could take place within the next one to three years.

According to CarNewsChina, the XPeng G6 Power X is priced from RMB186,800 (approx. RM106k). This slots it right in the middle of the XPeng G6 BEV lineup, which ranges from RMB176,800 (approx. RM101k) to RMB198,800 (approx. RM113k).

Closer to home, the XPeng G6 is currently offered in three variants in Malaysia, priced from RM159,948 to RM190,708 on-the-road and without insurance. With XPeng planning to introduce local assembly (CKD) in Malaysia by mid-2026, the REEV version could prove popular among Malaysian buyers should it make its way here, particularly as range anxiety remains a concern for some transitioning to fully electric vehicles.
