In just a few short years, the luxury MPV segment went from being basically just the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire, to now an endless sea of options, all vying for the same piece of cake. So to stand out, you’ll have to do things a little differently. Some choose to offer unbelievable discounts in hopes of capturing your attention, but for the XPeng X9, it does so with a design that’s truly unlike any other.

Dispensing with the usual square boxy fridge-on-wheels appearance so common in this segment, the XPeng X9 has instead opted for a spaceship-inspired shape with sharp angles and a massively raked rear windscreen, giving the luxury MPV a truly unique look – especially when paired to the red glowing XPeng logo at the back, and the matte grey paint job on our unit here.
The self-centering hubcaps on the 20-inch wheels further give the XPeng X9 a floating, spaceship-like appearance. And it even sounds that way, too, with the low-speed acoustic alert tones giving off an almost otherworldly noise.
Don’t worry, though, because the cabin is still just as lush as you’d expect from a luxury MPV. The seats on this are all decked out in sumptuous beige Nappa leather upholstery, and there’s even an air fragrance system in the top-of-the-range Pro Plus variant for the ultimate luxury motoring experience.
The second-row is where the main party’s at, with two individual captain chairs offering 14-way power adjustments with one-touch “zero gravity” recline, 10-point massage, seat ventilation, a 50W wireless charging pad, and an airplane-style fold-out tray table. Step up to the aforementioned Pro Plus, and the seats are further upgraded to the “Grand Sofa” option, with up to 18-way of power adjustments including a powered ottoman.

Entertainment duties for the rear passengers are handled by a ceiling-mounted 21.4-inch touchscreen, offering direct access to streaming services and apps, with audio piped through the 23-speaker, 2,180-watt Xopera sound system. In the mood for some bubbles? There’s even a fridge behind the front centre armrest, integrating both heating and cooling functions in one.
You’ll get to your destinations quickly, too. While 320 hp and 450 Nm isn’t all that impressive in this day and age, the 590 km (WLTP) range from the Long Range variants’ 101.5 kWh NMC battery pack means less time wasted on charging stops. Even the Standard Range models’ 84.5 kWh LFP battery too gets 500 km of range.

With prices starting at RM280,708 for the Standard Range 2WD Pro, RM298,708 for the Long Range 2WD Pro, and RM314,708 for the Long Range 2WD Pro Plus variant, the XPeng X9 is also on the lower-end of the new wave of new Chinese luxury MPVs in terms of pricing, so there’s that to stand out too. All figures are on-the-road without insurance, and inclusive of a five-year/120,000 km warranty, an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty, and a five-year/100,000 km free service package.
