With the ever-growing number of new battery electric vehicles rewriting the automotive landscape, the demands on tyre performance are likewise on the rise due to the unique characteristics of EVs. Picking the correct tyre that complements your EV can be a tricky task given the different performance benchmarks and the wealth of tyre choices in the market.
Understanding the unique attributes of an EV
Compared to internal combustion vehicles or even hybrids, an EV generally weighs more, runs quieter and is engineered for efficiency to maximise its driving range. On top of that, other driving characteristics such as instant torque delivery and regenerative braking also impact tyre performance and longevity.
While these attributes are typically associated with EVs, tyres with high load capacity, low noise capability and low rolling resistance are equally beneficial to vehicles powered by traditional forms of propulsion such as petrol engines and hybrid electric powertrains, as they are for EVs.
All Continental tyres are EV-compatible
From BYD to BMW and Kia, Continental is a leading supplier of original equipment tyres to 18 of the world’s 20 highest-volume manufacturers of fully electric vehicles. Continental develops tyres that are not only compatible with a wide spectrum of passenger vehicles but to also complement the characteristics of modern EVs, particularly in the key areas of load capacity, noise control and energy efficiency.

- The ComfortContact CC7 stands out for its superior comfort and quiet ride
- The EcoContact EC6/EC6 Q maximises energy efficiency and extends the driving range on a single charge
Choosing the correct tyres for your EV
Continental EV-compatible tyres are available in various sizes and ratings to suit different requirements. To ensure optimum safety, comfort and energy efficiency, it is crucial to choose tyres that match or exceed the specifications as stipulated by the manufacturer of the vehicle.
In general, heavier kerb weights of EVs necessitate a higher tyre Load Index (LI) – a value that denotes the maximum load a tyre can support when fully inflated. This value can be found in the owner’s manual and/or on the tyre information label typically affixed on a vehicle’s door sill or fuel cap.
The recommended tyre load index should then match what is spelled out on the sidewall of the tyre. As an example, 245/45 R17 99V refers to a tyre that’s 245 mm in width, 45 series in aspect ratio (the height of the tyre being 45% of its width), R for Radial construction with a 17-inch rim diameter, a load index of 99 along with a V speed index.
Similarly in the case of Speed Index (SI), which represents the maximum speed a tyre can sustain under its recommended load capacity, it is important to adhere to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations and of course, the speed limit on public roads.
Make Way for Confident, Sustainable Driving with EV-Compatible Tyres
Environmental responsibility and sustainability is central to how Continental develops EV-compatible tyres. Whether it is to maximise the driving dynamics, or to extend the mileage out of each battery charge, there is a suitable Continental tyre which allows owners to enjoy driving their EVs and to appreciate the full potential of electric mobility, making every journey fun, safe yet efficient.
