GWM Wey G9 previewed in Malaysia — PHEV luxury MPV, CKD, est. from under RM300k

Great Wall Motors Malaysia (GWM Malaysia) has previewed the GWM Wey G9 in near-production-ready configuration, ahead of its official launch before the end of 2025. Previously called the GWM Wey 80, the luxury MPV is expected to be priced below RM300,000 when it makes it official debut here.

The GWM Wey G9 will be locally assembled (CKD) here in Malaysia, as the first right-hand drive market globally to introduce the model – and the first to CKD the luxury MPV outside of China. GWM Malaysia says the Wey G9 will also be exported to Thailand, Indonesia, and other regional markets in the future.

The model on preview here is based on the medium-wheelbase variant of the Wey Gaoshan in China, which is available in three different length configurations. In this guise, the GWM Wey G9 measures 5280 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, 1,900 mm tall, with a 3,085 mm wheelbase, making it slightly larger than the renowned Toyota Alphard and goes toe to toe with some of its Chinese electric luxury MPV competitors like the Zeekr 009 and Denza D9.

Key design highlights of the Wey G9 include the large front grille with vertical slats, LED headlights, and a prominent full-width LED tail light at the back. The two sliding doors, along with the rear hatch, are all powered for easy access. Sitting on 18-inch rims, the car will be available in three exterior colours: Grey, Black, and White.

Unlike the car first shown during 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show, the GWM Wey G9 will arrive in Malaysia with the completely revamped interior “facelift” that only debuted in China earlier this year. That said, there are still a few key differences to the car shown at Auto Shanghai 2025.

While the 12.3-inch digital cluster remains, our unit here will only feature a single centre infotainment display, measuring 15.6 inches in diameter, as opposed to the dual-screen setup that’s available in its home country.

The GWM Wey G9, in this preview configuration, is offered in a seven-seater layout in a 2-2-3 seating configuration. Second-row occupants are treated to the captain’s seats with ventilation and 10-point massage functions for added comfort. These ‘boss seats’ get powered adjustments, including fore and aft movements, and also has a one-touch “zero-gravity” mode that automatically reclines the seat to a more relaxing position that reduces pressure points on the occupants.

The seats are wrapped in black Nappa leather, although GWM Malaysia says a Brown option will also be available. Rounding out the premium touches are the fold-out tables behind the front seats, ambient interior lighting, wood veneer trims, a 12.5-litre refrigerator (0-50 degree Celcius), with dual access via the front armrest and a rear drawer for backseat passengers, as well as a powered rear entertainment screen mounted behind the dedicated rear climate controls.

The third row seats are also mounted on powered sliding rails, and offers generous space that GWM Malaysia says can comfortably fit adults as tall as 1.8 metres. You’ll also find USB-A and USB-C charging ports on both sides, as well as two individual air vents on the roof.

When launched, the GWM Wey G9 will stand out as the only luxury MPV in Malaysia that’s offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 150 hp and 240 Nm of torque, which is paired to a dual-motor hybrid system – one integrated in the four-speed dedicated hybrid transmission, and the other on the rear e-axle – adding another 135 hp and 170 Nm.

Altogether, the GWM Wey G9 boasts a combined system output of 442 hp and 642 Nm of torque. With all-wheel drive, the Wey G9 is capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, onward to a top speed of 200 km/h — quick enough to keep up with keen Alphard drivers on the highway.

Beyond performance, GWM claims the Wey G9 offers a driving range of up to 1,000 km (NEDC) on a single tank. It can also run on electric power alone for up to 170 km (NEDC). Equipped with a 44.2 kWh battery, it supports both 6.6 kW AC charging and DC fast charging. While GWM hasn’t specified the DC charging capacity, it says the battery can be replenished from 30–80% in just 26 minutes.

GWM proudly cites the Wey G9’s 5-star NCAP safety rating, giving drivers peace of mind when carrying their loved ones. The A- and B-pillars integrate 2000 MPa high-strength steel for crash protection, while a tube-frame at the rear protects third-row passengers.

Structural adhesive strengthens the front pillars, and extra chassis beams help absorb impact energy and prevent bending. GWM also promises that passengers in all seating positions will be equally protected thanks to the large curtain airbags, measuring 3,107mm long and 700 mm wide.

The battery, meanwhile, is protected by four layers on the sides and six on the bottom to guard against impacts. Combined with a robust battery seal, the compartment has passed rigorous performance, stress, and reliability tests to ensure it stays functional in all conditions.

Order books for the GWM Wey G9 is now open, with prices expected to start below RM300,000. GWM says the car will be launching very soon, so stay tuned for the latest updates ahead of its debut later this year.
