Proton reveals first details of all-new 4th-gen Saga – new engine, modern exterior and interior design, ADAS

During the launch of Proton’s all-new EV factory in Tanjung Malim, the national brand featured a promotional video that gave a sneak peek of the upcoming all-new fourth-generation Proton Saga that will be built on the national carmaker’s AMA platform. While the company made no official announcement about the car’s specifications, the video itself appeared to confirm several key details.

As shown in the video, which the company has yet to publish on any of its public-facing channels, the all-new fourth-generation Proton Saga will sport an all-new exterior styling, featuring a new headlight design and a full-width taillight setup, the latter with a light signature resembling the Proton S70. The side mirrors, however, appear to be carried over from the outgoing model.

The interior, meanwhile, will feature oval-shaped air vents, as well as integrated displays for the infotainment screen and the driver’s digital gauge cluster. It is not yet known if this will be a standard feature or reserved only for the top-range variant.

On the mechanical side of things, Proton has confirmed that the new Saga will be equipped with a new engine, which the company says is derived from an existing Geely powertrain, but specifically tuned for the Saga. No details have been revealed just yet, but it is likely that the compact sedan will feature a naturally-aspirated version of the 1.5-litre four-cylinder mill found on the all-new Proton X50.

The BHE15 family of engines from Horse powertrain, the joint venture company between Geely Group and Renault, is also offered in both naturally aspirated direct injection and port-fuel injection guises, the latter is likely the candidate for the all-new Proton Saga, with outputs ranging between 99 and 110 hp.

The safety kit on the upcoming Proton Saga will also see the introduction of ADAS. Proton did not disclose the full suite of features, but based on the video, we can confirm that autonomous emergency braking (AEB) will be included.

The all-new fourth-generation Proton Saga is likely to be unveiled in the coming months, according to a product plan revealed earlier this year that confirmed that the national carmaker will launch at least three new models in 2025, which will also include the upcoming fully electric eMAS 5 (stylised as e.MAS 5).

Currently, the outgoing Proton Saga is available in four variants, priced between RM38,800 to RM44,800. It is powered by a 1.3-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder making 95 hp and 120 Nm to the front-wheels. A five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic are available, with the manual only offered on the base Standard MT variant.
