BYD, together with its Denza sub-brand, is the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) brand in Malaysia. As revealed by BYD Malaysia Managing Director, Eagle Zhao, at the launch of the BYD Atto 2 today, the Chinese marque has held on to the title of the best-selling EV brand in the country for three years in a row now, with a total of over 20,000 cars sold to-date.
This figure is bolstered by the 5,400 BYD and 615 Denza cars sold year-to-date as of June 2025, according to JPJ data. Of the former, the BYD Sealion 7 is the most popular with 1,960 units sold, followed by the Atto 3 with 1,701 units, the M6 with 977, Seal with 679, and the Dolphin with 83 units. The Chinese brand crossed the 10,000 mark in Malaysia just less than a year ago in August 2024.
Supporting the over 20,000 BYD owners in Malaysia is the marque’s sales and service network nationwide, which is expected to increase to 60 outlets nationwide by 2026.
On top of that, BYD Sime Motors, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, is also working with a wide range of local partners to simplify EV ownership for its customers, including flexible payment options, as well as door-to-door charging and rescue services from Power Up Tech.
While Zhao did not reveal what’s coming next for the brand today, he previously hinted at the arrival of the BYD Shark. Speaking to the media last year, he said that the company – together with its distributor partner Sime Darby Motors – has already begun investigating the viability of introducing the hybrid pickup truck here in Malaysia. Nevertheless, the all-new Atto 2 that was launched today, with its sticker price of RM100,000, would likely help strengthen BYD at the top of the sales chart.
That said, challengers are now coming thick and fast; the Proton e.MAS 7 has sold over 4,000 units between 1 January and 30 June, making it the best-selling EV model six months in a row – and that’s before the arrival of even cheaper models such as the upcoming Proton e.MAS 5, and Perodua’s first EV that’s rumoured to be called the QV-E, which BYD would struggle to compete price-wise due to the government’s regulations limiting the floor price of imported EV models to RM100,000.
