Chery Omoda 3 revealed in China – stylish compact SUV to rival the Perodua Ativa?

Photos of an all-new Chery compact crossover, dubbed the Omoda 3, have surfaced online over in China courtesy of Autohome.cn. According to the Chinese automotive portal, the pre-production model pictured here will eventually become the global export version of the Tiggo 3X and Tiggo 2 Pro.

As the name suggests, the new compact crossover will come in a segment lower than the Chery Omoda 5. Ditto its size, which will be more comparable to (but still larger than) the Perodua Ativa, rather than the Proton X50, if its dimensions are unchanged from the Tiggo 3X.

Just like its elder brother, the Chery Omoda 3 stands out against its peers thanks to its unique styling treatment on the outside. The standout feature, we think, are the daytime-running lights that flank the grille, thanks to its chequerboard light signature that help to visually extend the front grille.

There are also many quirky design elements all around the outside, such as the orange accents on the side skirts, fender claddings, roof rails, and wing mirrors. Its pre-production status is obvious, though – the bronze C-pillar ornament still reads Tiggo instead of Omoda.

With Chery positioning the Omoda brand for the younger crowd, the interior of the Omoda 3 here is also styled to impress, most notably its three-tone interior. It’s all hard plastic, sure, but at least it’s got some unique shapes all around the dashboard to elevate the ambience of the cabin, and separate itself from the more budget-oriented rivals.

Interior equipment highlights include a large infotainment display atop the dashboard, likely the same size as the one in the Omoda 5, a digital instrument cluster, as well as unique red ambient lighting elements on the dashboard ornament.

No official powertrain details are available just yet since it’s still in pre-production form, but we can expect a similar powertrain offering as the Tiggo 3X in China, which gets a 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine making 116 hp and 143 Nm of torque, paired to a CVT gearbox to drive the front wheels.

Chery is planning a grand return to Malaysia this year starting June, when they’ll be launching the Tiggo 8 Pro and Omoda 5. Would you like to see the Omoda 3 make its way into Malaysia too, as a rival against the Perodua Ativa? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
