Chery Omoda 5 to launch in Malaysia soon, EV version previewed at Auto Shanghai 2023

It is no secret that the Chery Omoda 5 will soon be launched in Malaysia, set to rival the typical B-segment SUVs. As we await the launch of the petrol-powered Omoda 5, an electric vehicle (EV) version of the car has taken centre stage at Auto Shanghai 2023.

There is very little information on the EV version of the Chery Omoda 5 version for now, but its presence at Auto Shanghai allows us to see the ‘electrifying’ differences that it has. With the petrol version of the Chery Omoda 5 already looking quite futuristic, the Chery Omoda 5 EV takes things a step further in terms of design.

Up front, gone is the jewel-like grille of the petrol Omoda 5 in favour of a smoother front bumper. The Chery Omoda 5 EV sports Omoda letterings between the headlights, a new lower grille design, and what appears to be a charging port cover smack in the centre of the front end. With the Omoda 5 lettering emblazoned between the headlights, the Omoda 5 EV doesn’t have the Chery emblem on the front.

On the sides, it appears that the Chery Omoda 5 EV now sits on a new set of wheels with a more aerodynamic design. The all-around claddings remain largely the same with an exception for the sides that now appear to have a decorative trim to enhance the EV version’s looks. The side mirrors are in body colour and the car sports a set of roof rails, unlike the version that was previewed in Malaysia late last year.

As the Chery emblem has been removed at the front, the back of the car has also removed the Chery lettering that was seen in between the taillights on the Malaysia-previewed version. The taillight design and tailgate apron design remain the same, although the rear bumper has been slightly tweaked. Unfortunately, there are no additional badges at the back to let us guess the specifications of the Chery Omoda 5 EV.

Inside, the twin-screen display now sits on a floating screen setup. In the Malaysia-preview version, it had a more continuous flow with the dashboard. Other differences compared to the Malaysia-preview version include the lighter colour scheme, ‘Omoda’ lettering instead of ‘Chery’ lettering on the steering wheel, and a repositioned gear selector. While the petrol version’s gear selector is positioned on the centre console, the EV version gets a clear clutter-free console. The gear selector has been moved closer to the steering wheel.

As mentioned, no official technical details have been shared on the electric car. With its petrol version coming soon to Malaysia an all-electric Chery Omoda 5 EV sounds like a worthy contender for the BYD Atto 3.
