The owner of the bespoke Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Gamer clearly loves video games

Growing up, we were all told that gaming doesn’t pay the bills. However, the owner of this bespoke Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Gamer, a tech entrepreneur, would beg to differ, and has commissioned what might just be the ultimate high-score trophy, showing off their love of the arcade era.

According to Rolls-Royce, the Black Badge Ghost Gamer is inspired by the 8-bit universe of vintage video games. But don’t mistake this for digital vapourware; it is a very real luxo-barge that incorporates crafted references to the early days of gaming.

The exterior features a two-tone paint job, with the main body in Salamanca Blue and the upper body in deep-shimmer Crystal over Diamond Black. This colour palette is a deliberate callback to the neon-lit aesthetic of the golden age of arcade gaming.

Complementing the colour palette are unique exterior motifs inspired by iconic gaming elements. These include a green ‘Cheeky Alien’ coachline graphic, featuring a pink 8-bit explosion graphic on one side and a yellow and blue version on the other. To replicate the look of their digital counterparts, each of these pixels is painstakingly hand-painted, measuring exactly 3 mm by 3 mm.

Beyond the playful 8-bit details, the car retains its signature Rolls-Royce opulence. The Black Badge Ghost Gamer features an imposing illuminated Pantheon grille, complemented by black brake callipers and 22-inch seven-spoke forged Black Badge wheels.

The interior of the Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Gamer is where the game truly begins. The cabin is loaded with retro-gaming motifs, specifically referencing the early days of arcade video games in the 1970s. These include bespoke embroideries, with ‘Player 1’ and ‘Player 2’ on the driver and front passenger seats, and ‘Player 3’ and ‘Player 4’ in the rear seats, all rendered in an 8-bit style font.

The craftsmen at Goodwood went the extra mile to replicate the electronic, flickering hues displayed on vintage arcade machines. Complementing these effects are contrasting block-colour ‘Cheeky Alien’ embroideries on each headrest. Mirroring the exterior, these were also formed from individual “pixels”, with exactly 89 stitches each to be specific.

Between the rear seats, which is called the ‘Waterfall’, Rolls-Royce finished this part in Black Badge Technical Fibre and inserted more retro gaming references, with a unique graphic consisting of two stainless steel ‘flying saucer’ spaceships hovering above a hand-painted lunar scene with a starscape backdrop, which design is also inspired by the artwork on early arcade machines.

Continuing the space theme, a subtle silver sparkle has been added to the lacquer of all Technical Fibre surfaces. These veneers also conceal several Easter eggs, including a rear picnic table featuring a metal ‘Cheeky Alien’ inlay. Even the chrome ‘bullseye’ air vents hide a secret: an 8-bit motif engraved on the underside.

The Illuminated Fascia, a feature that debuted on the Rolls-Royce Ghost, is also subtly reworked to illustrate the ‘Laser Base’ of many early games. It features a gunship composed of 85 individual stars, while the constellations themselves are adjusted so the ship appears to be flying through the starfield.

Another hallmark of retro gaming is the ‘Pixel Blaster’ Starlight Headliner. This feature depicts a formation of 80 bitmapped battlecruisers spanning the canopy, each crafted with hand-placed fibre-optic lights.

Similar to Space Invaders, Rolls-Royce has reconfigured its signature ‘Shooting Star’ effect to simulate laser fire and beams of light pulse from the ships across the ceiling, mimicking the chaotic action of the video game.

Topping off the retro gaming cues is a set of bespoke illuminated kickplates. These are engraved in the same 8-bit graphic lettering as the seat embroidery and feature classic arcade game prompts: ‘Press Start’, ‘Loading…’, ‘Level Up’, and ‘Insert Coin’.

Underneath all the retro gaming styling, the Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Gamer is powered by a 6.75-litre V12 engine that produces 600 hp and 900 Nm. This power is routed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
