A quartet of cars has recently achieved a five-star rating from ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries). These are the MG S5 EV, BYD Seal, Suzuki Fronx, and Zeekr X, which are tested under the 2021–2025 assessment protocol.
Starting with the MG S5 EV, the SUV scored a total of 92.39 points out of a possible 100. This is broken down into 37.90 points for adult occupant protection (AOP), 16.99 for child occupant protection (COP), 20 points for safety assist (SA), and 17.50 points for motorcyclist safety (MS).
In the frontal offset test, ASEAN NCAP noted that the MG S5 EV’s main passenger compartment remained stable. However, data from the test dummy showed marginal protection for the driver’s chest, but confirmed adequate protection for both the driver’s lower legs and the front passenger’s right lower leg.
For safety systems, the MG S5 EV is equipped with seven airbags and a suite of ADAS systems that is based around an 8MP front camera and two millimetre-wave radars. These ADAS features include adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, blind spot monitors, forward collision warning, lane change assist, and a drowsiness monitor system.
The MG S5 EV is available in three variants, priced from RM107,900 to RM127,900, and is now RM8,000 cheaper across all variants compared to its initial launch in May 2025.
BYD Seal
Marking the first BYD model to be tested by ASEAN NCAP, the BYD Seal has achieved a total score of 92.07 points out of a possible 100. This is broken down into 38.44 points for AOP, 16.60 points for COP, 19.52 points for SA, and 17.50 points for MS.
In the frontal offset test, ASEAN NCAP noted that the BYD Seal’s main passenger compartment remained stable. Test dummy data confirmed adequate protection for the passenger’s chest and right lower leg, as well as for the driver’s foot and ankle.
The BYD Seal is equipped with eight airbags and a suite of ADAS, which includes adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, emergency lane keep assist, and front and rear cross traffic alert.
The BYD Seal lineup in Malaysia has recently been updated, and now features two variants: Premium and Performance. Prices starts from RM171,800 and RM191,800 respectively.
Suzuki Fronx
Open for booking in Malaysia, the upcoming Suzuki Fronx has achieved a score of 77.70 points out of a possible 100. This is broken down into 36.71 points for AOP, 15.27 points for COP, 15.71 points for SA, and 10 points for MS.
ASEAN NCAP noted that the Suzuki Fronx’s main passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test. The test data confirmed adequate chest protection for both the driver and the front passenger. However, protection for the driver’s right lower leg was rated as marginal.
The Suzuki Fronx is equipped with six airbags as standard, with ADAS features found in higher variants. These include autonomous emergency braking, automatic cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, and a 360-degree surround view camera.
Zeekr X
The Zeekr X has achieved a score of 94.64 points out of a possible 100. This is broken down into a full score of 40 points for AOP, 17.14 points for COP, 20 points for SA, and 17.50 points for MS.
ASEAN NCAP noted that the Zeekr X’s main passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test, providing good protection to both the driver and front passenger.
For safety systems, the Zeekr X in Malaysia features eight airbags and a suite of ADAS features, which include adaptive cruise control, automatic lane change, lane centring control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitors, with front and rear cross traffic alert.
The Zeekr X in Malaysia is avaialbe in two variants: Premium RWD and Flagship AWD. Prices starts at RM155,800 and RM172,800.
