Smart #5 now open for booking in Malaysia – 2 variants, up to 590 km range

Pro-Net, the new energy vehicle subsidiary of Proton and sole distributor of Smart vehicles in Malaysia, has announced the commencement of order bookings for the Smart #5. Interested customers are able to place a booking for a fee of RM2,000 via the Hello Smart mobile application or the Smart Malaysia website.

The Smart #5 will be launched in Malaysia in two variants, namely the Premium and the Brabus, although an entry-level Pro variant was also mentioned during the preview of the model earlier this year, which we presume will only arrive at a later date.

No pricing information was disclosed for these two launch variants, although it’ll most likely be higher than the RM215,000 and RM255,000 commanded by the Smart #3 Premium and Brabus variants, respectively.

Measuring 4,705 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,705 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase, the Smart #5 is the marque’s largest model to date. It is built on the SEA3/PMA2+ architecture, which is shared with the Zeekr 7X.

If the design of the Smart #5 reminds you of the Mercedes-Benz GLB, it’s no accident. The #5 was also styled by Mercedes-Benz Group Design, headed by Gorden Wagener, giving the SUV a more utilitarian and boxy presence compared to its sleeker Smart #1 and #3 siblings.

Smart #5 Brabus

The performance-focused Brabus model of the Smart #5 features exclusive Brabus styling. These includes 21-inch Brabus Monoblock Z wheels, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with illuminated Brabus lettering, a microfiber roof lining, sport pedals, Brabus interior badging, and both ventilated and heated rear seats.

The Smart #5’s interior is dominated by a three-screen setup, featuring twin 13-inch AMOLED 2.5K touchscreens for the main infotainment and passenger displays, alongside a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster display.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported. Joining the trend of integrating AI, the Smart #5 comes integrated with ChatGPT, all powered by the AMD V2000 automotive chip, ensuring smoother operation and visuals, while supporting over-the-air (OTA) updates.

The driver is also furnished with a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD). Other premium interior features include Nappa leather upholstery, oak wood trimmings, a chilled centre console, double-insulated glass, and ventilated front seats.

The Smart #5 boasts some smart features like three configurable bed modes and a one-button comfort setting for rear passengers. Practicality highlights include 34 storage compartments, a 72-litre frunk, and a boot space with up to 1,530 litres with the rear seats folded.

Powering the Smart #5 Premium variant is a rear-mounted electric motor producing 363 hp (267 kW) and 373 Nm. This enables a 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.5 seconds. Equipped with a 100 kWh nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) ternary battery pack, the #5 Premium has a range of 590 km (WLTP).

Smart #5 Brabus

The Brabus variant gets a beefier dual-motor setup that produces a combined 646 hp (475 kW) and 710 Nm. This added power cuts the 0–100 km/h sprint down to 3.8 seconds and pushes the top speed to 210 km/h. Despite sharing the same 100 kWh NCM battery, the Brabus has a slightly shorter range at 540 km (WLTP).

Both the Premium and Brabus are built on an 800V architecture, supporting 22 kW AC charging and 400 kW DC charging, which enables a 10–80% charge in just 15 minutes.

The Smart #5 will be equipped with an ADAS suite that is improved over the Smart #1 and #3. This enhanced system features improved camera resolution and the addition of a rearward-facing camera, which works alongside five radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors. All of this hardware is powered by dual Nvidia Drive OrinX chips.

The active safety features include front and rear Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assist, and fully autonomous parking.
