For those who were complaining about the white interior on the Proton eMAS 5 (stylised as e.MAS 5) as shown during the preview, good news – the upcoming compact EV will also be offered with a black interior option, according to a recent social media video shared by the national carmaker.
The blacked-out interior of the Proton eMAS 5 was shown to the public during its nationwide “Misi 5” tour, where the white-and-blue interior has been replaced by what appears to be a more subtle black-and-grey two-tone look.
Based on the video, it appears the satin trims from the preview model will remain here. However, poor lighting makes it hard to tell whether they’re the same shade as its lighter counterpart, or a darker, smoked version.
Beyond interior colours, the rest of the car should be exactly the same as we’ve covered during its initial preview. The interior will feature an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 14.6-inch central infotainment display — the latter running on Atlas Auto operating system developed by ACO tech.
Most notably, this system will come with the “world’s first” English-Malay dual-language voice assistant, along with both wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. It’s powered by an “automotive-grade chip” designed for quick processing and tackling the gruesome Malaysian heat.
On the outside, the eMAS 5 mostly mirrors its Chinese counterpart, the Geely Xingyuan, with the main differences being the round Proton badge and “PROTON” wordmark on the tailgate. Just like the Xingyuan, the car rides on 16-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels and features a two-tone floating roof. Other standard equipment include LED headlights and taillights, a powered tailgate, and semi-concealed door handles.

The eMAS 5 uses a single rear-mounted motor with 116 hp and 150 Nm, accelerating from 0–50 km/h in 3.9 seconds. A CATL-sourced 40.16 kWh LFP battery provides up to 325 km (WLTP) of range, and supports 6.6 kW AC and 71 kW DC charging — the latter charges 30-80% in just 21 minutes.
As of writing, the Proton eMAS 5 is in the final leg of its nationwide tour in East Malaysia. While Proton hasn’t confirmed a launch date, the car is expected to launch soon after the tour concludes on 5 October. With an expected price below RM100,000, it will be Proton’s – and likely the nation’s – most affordable electric vehicle yet.
