2025 GAC Emkoo receives 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating ahead of Malaysian launch

Ahead of its local debut in Q3 2025, the GAC Emkoo has formally received a five-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries), tested under the 2021–2025 assessment protocol.

The GAC Emkoo achieved an overall score of 84.96 points out of a possible 100. This is broken down into 37.88 points for adult occupant protection, 16.01 points for child occupant protection, 18.57 points for safety assist, and 12.50 points for motorcyclist safety.

According to ASEAN NCAP, the GAC Emkoo’s body structure is stable and protects its occupants during a frontal or side collision. For the driver, the tests showed that while the lower legs had adequate protection, the protection for the chest area was rated as marginal. In the child occupant protection tests, the results were positive, showing that child dummies were well-protected when secured with the car’s standard adult seatbelts.

Standard safety equipment for the GAC Emkoo includes six airbags, a 540-degree surround-view monitor with a transparent chassis view, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The Emkoo is also equipped with a host of SAE Level 2 semi-autonomous advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

Now open for booking, the GAC Emkoo will be launched in Malaysia as a locally assembled (CKD) model, priced from an estimated RM120,000 for the Premium variant and RM130,000 for the Premium Pro variant.

Measuring 4,680 mm long, 1,901 mm wide, and 1,670 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, the GAC Emkoo will rival other C-segment SUVs when launched, coming in larger than the Proton X70 and similar in size to the Honda CR-V.

Following the footsteps of its quirkily designed smaller sibling, the GS3 Emzoom, the Emkoo uses very interesting names for its exterior design features. Case in point: “Eyes of Revelation” headlights, an “Illuminant” V-shaped grille, and the “Quantum Lightsabers” taillights. We can’t help but wonder if the designer is a fan of sci-fi blockbusters?

The interior of the GAC Emkoo looks a lot more conventional compared to the exterior and features a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display. This is paired with a digital instrument cluster measuring 7 inches for the Premium variant, and a larger 10.25-inch unit for the Premium Pro. Other interior features include a crystal-style gear shift lever and a 50W wireless charging pad.

Both variants of the GAC Emkoo will be powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that sends 177 hp and 270 Nm to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. GAC did not provide 0-100 km/h specifications, but states the Emkoo has a rated fuel consumption of 6.6 L/100 km (NEDC).

Slated for a Malaysian launch in Q3 2025, the GAC Emkoo will be priced at an estimated RM120,000 for the Premium variant and RM130,000 for the Premium Pro variant. The GAC Emkoo is backed by a standard five-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, along with a seven-year/180,000 km engine and powertrain warranty.
