For the past week, we had been guessing what BYD’s secretive new “6” model could be. While initial thoughts pointed to the Seal 6 sedan or the Sealion 6 DM-i to be introduced here in Malaysia soon, BYD Sime Motors’ latest teaser has thrown a wrench in the works. The image reveals a unique rear light signature, and after a bit of online detective work, it seems the mystery car is indeed a sedan called the BYD Qin L EV in China.
The BYD Qin L was launched in its home country early this year, as part of the brand’s Dynasty series. This won’t be the first car from the series to make its way onto our shores, as it’s the same family of cars that includes the BYD Yuan Up, which you’ll recognise in Malaysia as the recently launched BYD Atto 2, as well as the Yuan Plus, which is sold here as the Atto 3.
Like its SUV siblings, the model will certainly be named differently here, but what could it be? One thing is certain – the official name will include the number “6” somewhere. We’re guessing the BYD Seal 6, but frankly, your guess is as good as ours. Anyway, we digress.
The BYD Qin L EV measures 4,720 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,495 mm tall, with a 2,820 mm wheelbase. Compared to the BYD Seal we already have, that means it’s a little shorter, a bit taller, slightly wider, and has a more compact wheelbase.

Unlike the ocean-themed design of the BYD Seal, the Qin L features what BYD calls the ‘Loong Face’ design language (no, not long face). ‘Loong’ from Mandarin translates to dragon, so this presumably refers to a dragon-inspired aesthetic, although from the front, we see a clear resemblance to its smaller sibling, the Atto 2.
The family resemblance continues at the rear, where the Qin L sports what appears to be BYD’s ‘infinity ring’ taillight signature within a full-width light bar.
Inside, the BYD Qin L’s infotainment display is available in either 12.8-inch or 15.6-inch sizes, while the 8.8-inch driver’s digital gauge cluster is standard across the range. Other interior trimmings include a wireless charging pad, a fridge in the centre console, an eight-speaker sound system, and 24 storage compartments, which include a frunk.
In the Middle Kingdom, the BYD Qin L is available in three variants, which are split between two different rear-wheel drive powertrain options. The base variant gets a 149 hp (110 kW) and 220 Nm motor, which is juiced by a 46.08 kWh battery. This setup is good for a range of 470 km, according to the very optimistic CLTC cycle.
The two higher-tier variants share a more powerful electric motor that makes 217 hp (160 kW) and 330 Nm. This is paired to a larger 56.64 kWh battery that bumps the range up to 545 km (CLTC).
While BYD did not disclose specific AC or DC charging specifications, according to the official brochure, the company states that all variants can be recharged from 30-80% in just 24 minutes.
In China, the BYD Qin L is priced from RMB119,800 (approx. RM71k) to RMB139,800 (approx. RM83k). This suggests that if launched here, the Qin L will likely be positioned below the updated BYD Seal, which is priced at RM179,800 and RM199,800.
