Smart has announced that it will be bringing back the cute and tiny Smart Fortwo in late 2026 – but this time to be called the Smart #2. The new model will mark the return of the iconic city car for the Smart brand, about two years after the discontinuation of the third-generation model in 2024.
According to Smart, the #2 will be a fully-electric model and is the result of a successful feasibility study, which was codenamed internally as “Project: Two.” When it makes its debut late next year, the all-new Smart #2 will be launched in China, Europe, and other selected global markets.
Following in the footsteps of the Smart #1, #3, and #5, the upcoming #2 will be designed by Mercedes-Benz and built on an all-new proprietary architecture, which Smart says was developed in-house specifically for ultra-compact vehicles.
Based on a teaser silhouette, the Smart #2’s design appears to stay true to its predecessors. Its profile is nearly identical, strongly suggesting it will retain the iconic two-door, two-seater layout the microcar is known for. To picture just how small the Smart Fortwo is, the third-generation car was only 2,695 mm long—almost a full meter shorter than a Perodua Axia.
That tiny size often raises questions about safety. However, Daimler addressed these worries years ago with a famous demonstration: crashing a Fortwo head-on into a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The test was designed to showcase the incredible strength of the microcar’s Tridion safety cell, a core feature of its design.
On the opposite end of the size spectrum, the electric Smart #5—the company’s largest model to date at a colossal 4,705 mm long—is almost twice as long as the previous Smart Fortwo. This larger SUV is expected to launch in Malaysia soon and was recently previewed locally with three variants available: the Smart #5 Pro, Smart #5 Premium, and Smart #5 Brabus.
