Proton, Smart, and Leapmotor loan EVs to MOT, supporting govt’s low-carbon goals

Proton, Smart, and Leapmotor, along with several other automotive brands, have loaned the Ministry of Transport (MOT) a fleet of electric vehicles (EVs). The cars will be loaned to the ministry for three months, allowing the ministry to better understand the EV environment as well as assess the viability of EVs and hybrid cars in Malaysia.

The fleet, handed over at a ceremony held at the MOT headquarters, include the Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7), Smart #1, Smart #3, and Leapmotor C10, giving the government a chance to experience a diverse lineup of electric vehicles across different sizes and brands.

Similar to what BYD and Toyota have done earlier this year, Pro-Net (the new energy subsidiary of Proton) and Stellantis Malaysia say the three-month-long testing period will allow government stakeholders to experience the existing potential of EV technology in Malaysia.

Both companies view this collaboration as an opportunity to provide valuable insights for national EV infrastructure planning, while also playing a key role in promoting wider EV adoption across the public and private sectors.

The move emphasises the shared vision between the carmakers and government in driving sustainable transportation, in line with the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) 2021-2030 that aims to decarbonise the land transport sector in Malaysia.

The LCMB is a blueprint aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, and promoting the adoption of EVs for a cleaner, more sustainable transportation ecosystem. It also sets a target of 15% electrified vehicle adoption by 2030.

This initiative further reflects the Government’s determination to accelerate the nation’s green mobility agenda, foster innovation, and strengthen Malaysia’s position as a forward-looking country in sustainable transportation.

Pro-Net Chief Executive Officer, Zhang Qiang, said, “This collaboration exemplifies our commitment to driving Malaysia’s transition towards sustainable mobility. By empowering government agencies with firsthand experience of Proton e.MAS and smart vehicles, we are fostering a deeper understanding and readiness for the electrified future.”
