The all-new Volvo XC70 has rolled off the production line in China from Volvo’s Taizhou plant, ahead of the start of its pre-sales at the upcoming Chengdu Auto Show on 27 August 2025.
As its name suggests, the Volvo XC70 is positioned between the Volvo XC60 and XC90. It is built on Volvo’s new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform, which has been dubbed the “premium extended-range PHEV” architecture, designed to meet the demand for long-range plug-in hybrids in the Chinese market.
Designed with a similar aesthetic to the electric EX90, the Volvo XC70 features a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine making 163 hp and 255 Nm, which is paired with a complex P1+P2+P4 electric motor setup.
More specifically, the P1 motor is solely for power generation, while the P2 and P4 motors serve as the XC70’s primary drive motors. For individual outputs, the P1 motor produces 81 hp (60 kW), the P2 makes 145 hp (107 kW), and the P4 makes 212 hp (156 kW).
Volvo did not disclose the combined system output for the XC70 but stated that this powertrain is paired to a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) with seven different hybrid operating modes.

According to a regulatory filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), two battery packs will be offered: a 21.22 kWh LFP pack allowing a pure EV range of 100 km (CLTC), and a larger 39.63 kWh NMC pack that boosts the pure EV range to 180 km (CLTC).
This powertrain setup is said to provide the Volvo XC70 with a combined range of 1,200 km and a fuel consumption figure of 5.85 L/100km under WLTC conditions when the battery is depleted, according to CarNewsChina.
Reportedly, the Volvo XC70’s interior features a 15.4-inch central infotainment display, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, and a massive 92-inch AR heads-up display. It is not yet known if the XC70 will be available as a five-seater or a three-row six-seater. Considering its position between the XC60 and XC90, a six-seater, three-row configuration is possible.
Primarily designed with the Mainland Chinese market in mind, Volvo has not revealed any information on whether the XC70 will be made available in global markets.
