Next-gen MG4 specifications revealed – Semi-solid-state battery variant launching in September 2025

MG Motor has unveiled the full specifications of the electric MG4 in China, following the start of its pre-sales on 5 August and ahead of its official market launch expected in early September 2025. Four variants of the electric hatchback will be available at launch, with pre-sale pricing ranging from RMB73,800 (approx. RM48k) to RMB105,800 (approx. RM69k) in the Middle Kingdom.

Measuring 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,551 mm tall, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, the second-generation MG4 is significantly larger than the outgoing model it replaces. It also features a cleaner and more mature exterior design compared to the funky and edgy styling of the previous generation.

Aside from its new exterior design, the other significant change on the second-generation MG4 is that all variants will now be powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing 163 hp (120 kW) and 250 Nm of torque. For comparison, this is 7 hp less powerful than the standard single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) MG4 on sale in Malaysia, which outputs 170 hp (125 kW) and 250 Nm.

Despite having slightly lesser power, the dip would likely not make a difference, and the new MG4 could feel even snappier, thanks to the all-new model tipping the scales at just 1,485 kg for its range-topping variant, compared to the 1,655 kg of its predecessor with a comparable battery size.

On that note, two lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs are available for the MG4 in China: a 42.8 kWh pack enabling a range of 437 km on the more optimistic CLTC cycle, and a larger 53.95 kWh unit, which bumps the range up to 530 km (CLTC). The company did not disclose the actual charging specifications, but states that all variants can be recharged from 30-80% in 20 minutes.

None of the variants on the current pre-sale spec sheet are equipped with the 70 kWh semi-solid-state battery, that was teased earlier by the brand. The MG4 was claimed to be the world’s first mass production model to feature the advanced battery, and SAIC Motor has confirmed that the additional variant will be announced only in September, in line with the model’s official market launch in China.

Nonetheless, the interior of the all-new MG4 is equipped with a 10.25-inch infotainment display as standard, which can be upgraded to 12.8-inch, with the top-range variant getting a 15.6-inch unit. For the driver, the spec sheet confirms a full LCD digital gauge cluster, although the company has not disclosed its size.

For safety systems, the top-of-the-line MG4 in China is equipped with 12 ultrasonic sensors. These enable a comprehensive suite of autonomous driving features, including navigate on autopilot (NOA) functions like autonomous lane change assist, intelligent speed adjustment on entry and exit ramps, and autonomous parking. In contrast, the other three variants are only equipped with three ultrasonic sensors and do not come with these advanced ADAS features.

Currently, the first-generation MG4 is on sale in Malaysia across four variants, priced from RM103,999 to RM158,999 as a fully-imported (CBU) model from China.
