Proton names Ainol Azmil as covering Deputy CEO, Roslan Abdullah steps down after five years


Proton has announced that Ainol Azmil has been appointed the role of covering Deputy Chief Executive Officer, effective June 10. He will take over the responsibilities of the role from Roslan Abdullah, who is stepping down from the position after five years, and will be reporting directly to Proton Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Li Chunrong.

Prior to this new position, Ainol was in charge of Corporate Strategy and Group Technical Procurement in Proton. He will continue to oversee these areas during the interim period.

Proton CEO, Dr Li Chunrong, said “Proton welcomes Ainol Azmil to the role of covering Deputy Chief Executive Officer. We are confident in his ability to take on this temporary appointment.”

“At the same time, Proton would like to convey utmost gratitude to Roslan Abdullah for his contribution to the company and we wish him well in his future undertakings,” he added.

Roslan Abdullah served as Proton’s CEO for five years, steering the company through significant milestones. Under his leadership, Proton not only solidified its position in the Malaysian automotive market but also made a notable entry into the electric vehicle (EV) sector with the Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS7). Launched in late 2024, the e.MAS 7 quickly became Malaysia’s best-selling EV, capturing a 30% market share by Q1 2025.

Joining Proton in 2020 as Vice President of Sales and Marketing and CEO of Proton Edar, Roslan brought over three decades of automotive industry experience. His previous roles included President and Chief Operating Officer at Honda Malaysia, which has contributed to his work at Proton.
