Proton eMAS 7 proves its resilience with 10,432 km journey across 9 ASEAN countries – in 22 days

Proton was proud to announce that the Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) has smoothly completed the ASEAN Unity Drive 2025 – a 22-day-long drive across nine countries in the region, spanning over 10,432 km.

Organised by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics, and IoT institute (MARii), the fleet of Proton eMAS 7 vehicles journeyed through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, East Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah), Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, and eventually back to Peninsular Malaysia.

Altogether, the cars travelled over 10,432 km, surpassing its original 9,000 km target by 1,432 km. PRO-NET says this will set a strong benchmark for EV quality in the region.

PRO-NET Chief Executive Officer, Zhang Qiang, said, “Completing over 10,000 kilometres across nine countries without a single battery issue is no small feat,” praising the team who worked on the Proton eMAS 7 project for their achievement on this journey.

The journey however, was definitely not all sunshine and rainbows. A driver participating in the trip highlighted the range anxiety while travelling from Laos to Cambodia. The next planned charging station from the leg between Pakse to Krong Kracheh was 356km away – well within the car’s range. But due to constantly changing road conditions, it meant that the system quoted range was never to be fully relied on.

Throughout the journey, poor road conditions forced the team to improvise on their charging situations. There was an instance where the drivers strayed too far away from the original planned charging point, which forced the team to charge the car at a coffee shop using the portable AC charger – just to make up enough range to reach the next charging station.

Local Motoring Journalist, Yamin Vong, said, “As an EV, what impressed me about the eMAS delivered [sic] on its stated range of 430 km when we started on our AUD sector from Kota Kinabalu to BSB in Brunei. This included the road between Papar and the Sepitang border, part of the Pan Borneo Highway.

“However, this stretch is under construction and, much like a war zone, had to be driven carefully. The eMAS capably coped with the huge potholes and gravel stretches. It rained heavily on the flood-prone Beaufort sector and the eMAS handled the bad weather and water-logged conditions with aplomb. As a wannabe owner of an EV, this eMAS inspires me.”

The Proton eMAS 7 is currently offered in Malaysia in two variants, both making 160 hp and 320 Nm from a single front-mounted electric motor. The Prime variant has a 49.52 kWh battery capable of 345 km (WLTP) range and supports 11kW AC or 80 kW DC charging.

The Premium variant on the other hand has a bigger 60.22 kWh battery capable of 410 km (WLTC) range, with support of 100 kW DC charging. Both cars can charge from 30%-80% in just 30 minutes with their respective DC charging speeds.

The Prime and Premium variant of the Proton eMAS 7 is priced at RM105,800 and RM119,800 respectively on-the-road and without insurance.
