Gallery: Denza D9 Advanced FWD—Alphard level luxury from RM259k

The Denza D9 was launched earlier this year in Malaysia with a starting price of RM259,000, adding to the growing lineup of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) MPVs – alongside the Zeekr 009 and Xpeng X9 – that compete against the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire.

The D9 is the first model here from Denza, BYD’s luxury sub-brand. While currently the sole offering, the brand has also hinted at the forthcoming arrival of the Z9 GT.

In Malaysia, the D9 is available in two variants: the Advanced front-wheel-drive (FWD) and the Premium all-wheel-drive (AWD). What we have, here, is the D9 Advanced FWD.

On the outside, the Denza D9 looks imposing—a common theme in this class of car. Despite not having an engine, it’s got a π (Pi) Motion front grille displayed boldly at the front. The car features soft closing front doors and power sliding rear doors, while riding on 18-inch wheels. The premium variant adds on full length day-time running lights that run all the way down the front bumper.

Move inside and you’ll be greeted with a 15.6-inch infotainment display, paired to a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The car comes with three 50W wireless chargers (one on the centre console, two on the rear captain seats) and boasts a 410-litre boot space. With the third row seats folded down, this is increased to 570 litres.

The selling point of the D9 lies on its rear captain seats. The seats are 10-way power adjustable and are paired with a six-way adjustable headrest. Each captain seat gets their own 5.5-inch display for vehicle and seat controls and also features a massage function.

Notable standard interior features include a powered panoramic sunroof, 14-speaker Dynaudio sound system, eight-way power adjustable front seats with ventilation, and a fridge located below the centre console that goes from -6 to 55 degrees Celsius.

The Premium specification elevates the premium experience with features such as suede headliners, front seat massage functionality, Nappa leather upholstery, genuine wood veneer accents, and a heads-up display.

The Advanced FWD variant features a singular electric motor that produces 313 hp and 360 Nm. It sprints from 0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds and boasts an NEDC range of 600 km.

The Premium AWD variant on the other hand features a dual electric motor setup that makes a combined output of 374 hp and 470 Nm. That translates to a quicker 0-100 km/h time of 6.9 seconds, although range has been shortened to 580 km (NEDC).

Both variants are equipped with a 103.36 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, supporting 11 kW AC and 166 kW DC fast charging. The latter enables a 30% to 80% charge in just 30 minutes. The Advanced FWD model features Frequency Selective Variable Damping suspension, while the Premium AWD variant is enhanced with the more advanced DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Body Control System.

Safety wise, the D9 comes standard with a large array of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that includes front cross traffic alert (FCTA), adaptive cruise control (ACC), and lane change assist (LCA), just to name a few.

The Denza D9 is priced from RM259,000 on-the-road (OTR) without insurance for the Advanced FWD, while the Premium AWD starts from RM309,000 OTR without insurance.

Included in the price is an eight year or 160,000 km mileage warranty for the battery, and up to eight years or 150,000 km on its drive motor and motor controller. The Denza D9 will also come with a vehicle warranty of up to six years or 150,000 km.
