The Shanghai Auto Show 2025 saw the unveiling of the Nio firefly, a fully-electric (EV) model marking the debut of Nio’s new sub-brand, firefly, which joins the company’s existing divisions like Onvo. Yes, it’s spelt with a lower case ‘f’.
Priced from RMB119,800 (approx. RM72k) in China, deliveries are expected to take place by the end of April 2025. Nio also has ambitious international plans for the Firefly, targeting 16 markets, with Europe marked for a summer launch before a global rollout.
In terms of size, the Nio firefly is a compact hatchback; measuring 4,003 mm long, 1,781 mm wide, and 1,557 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,615 mm. It’s comparable in size to the Dongfeng Box, an EV compact hatchback launched in Malaysia late last year.
Designed at Nio’s global design headquarters in Munich, Germany, the firefly’s standout feature is arguably its unique “trio lights” headlight arrangement. While sporting a bug-eyed look, we reckon it bears a stronger resemblance to a spider’s eyes rather than a firefly’s.

The rear design echoes the insect-like front with a similar taillight arrangement, a design that makes it stand out in the current sea of minimalist-styled EVs on the road.
Despite its small footprint, the Nio firefly boasts an impressive 27 storage compartments throughout the interior, including a glove box, a centre console drawer. There are also storage bins under the front passenger seat and a 29-litre storage beneath the rear bench.
Boot space is rated at 404 litres according to Nio, and can be expanded to 1,253 litres with the rear seats folded. Combining both its 92 litre frunk plus its boot, the firefly has a total cargo capacity of 496 litres. It can be extended up to 1,345 litres with the rear seats folded.
Other interior features include a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment display, a 6-inch letterbox-style display for the driver’s digital gauge cluster, a digital rearview mirror, a 256-colour ambient light system, and a 14-speaker sound system.
The Nio firefly’s infotainment system, which supports over-the-air (OTA) updates, also incorporates smart multi-touch “blind control” gestures for adjusting frequently used settings such as climate control and media volume.
This quirky EV hatchback even features its own dedicated on-board smart AI Assistant called ‘lumo’, which Nio claims can control over 86% of the vehicle’s functions via voice commands, from phone calls and ambient lighting to music and seat adjustments.
Powering the Nio firefly is an in-house developed electric motor mounted on the rear axle, producing 143 hp (105 kW) and 200 Nm of torque. This translates to a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h.
The electric motor draws power from a 42.1 kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery pack, providing a range of 330 km (WLTP). Nio states that the Firefly’s range can extend to 470 km (WLTP) in city driving conditions.
Another key highlight is the Nio firefly’s swappable battery pack design. This will presumably be facilitated by Nio’s dedicated battery swap stations, with the firefly expected to utilise the company’s fifth-generation stations rolling out from 2026.
For conventional charging, the Nio firefly supports AC charging up to 11 kW and DC charging at 100 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% recharge in 29 minutes.
In terms of safety systems, it’s equipped with advanced driver assistance features (ADAS) powered by a 128 TOPS processor with 20 sensors and cameras.
With this hardware, Nio claims the firefly can offer up to 30 ADAS features, including parking space detection and autonomous parking, adaptive cruise control, pilot assist, and active lane change.
Other than launching in Europe, Nio has confirmed that the Firefly will be launched in Singapore where a right-hand drive (RHD) variant of the Firefly will be ready by October 2025, according to Cnevpost. That being said, could the Nio Firefly make its way to Malaysia?
The current EV compact hatchback market here consists of the aforementioned Dongfeng Box, Ora Good Cat, and MINI Electric. Perhaps with the right pricing, the Nio Firefly could be a hit within Malaysia, who knows?
