Nissan Frontier PRO – first Nissan PHEV and electrified pick-up debuts in China

Nissan together with Dongfeng Motor Co., its local assembly partner has revealed the all-new Nissan Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid (PHEV) pick-up. The all-new pickup is only one of nine (yes, nine) New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) that Nissan plans to launch in China by the summer of 2027.

When the Frontier Pro PHEV goes on sale in China later this year, it will be the brand’s first-ever PHEV and Nissan’s first ever electrified pick-up.

At the heart of the PHEV is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, with an electric motor integrated with the transmission. Together, Nissan claims that it makes a combined output of ‘over 408 hp’ and 850 Nm of torque.

There’s no information on battery size but Nissan claims a pure EV range of up to 135 km. As it is a pick-up, the Frontier Pro comes with an electromechanical differential lock with 4High and 4Low settings. The drive modes include hybrid, pure electric, performance and snow.

The Frontier comes with an Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system that automatically controls torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. It’s fitted with independent double wishbone suspension in the front and a 5-link multi-link rear suspension. It gets disc brakes all round, with an electronic parking brake.

In terms of size, it measures 5,520 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, 1,950 mm tall, with a 3,300 mm wheelbase. It weighs between 2,500 and 2,540 kg and ground clearance is at 231 mm with the vehicle fully loaded.

As for the cargo bed, it measures 1,520 mm long, 1,600 mm wide and 490 mm tall. Also in the cargo bed are two vehicle-to-load (V2L) power outlets (220V 10/16 Amp) and a 12V outlet. The Frontier Pro PHEV rides on 18-inch tyres with 265/65 R18 tyres.

Developed around the concept of Rugged Tech, it’s made to look modern on the outside, with a refined interior. The Nissan logo illuminates, with five LED lights on the front hood. The Frontier Pro’s front LED lighting were inspired by the distinctive three-slot opening in the hood of the 1980s Nissan D21 hardbody pickup.

Inside the Frontier Pro PHEV is a large 14-inch screen, while the front seats offer heating, ventilation, and massaging. Also standard is the 10-inch instrument display, and panoramic roof.

Nissan did not announce whether the Frontier Pro will be sold in Malaysia but they did say it will be exported outside of China. Considering the popularity of pick-ups in Malaysia, who knows what could be?
