The inferno that occurred in Putra Heights, USJ, on the second day of Hari Raya has caused devastating damages to properties in the surrounding residential area, in addition to over 180 residents displaced, and more than 305 individuals sustaining injuries. Among the chaos that ensued, some 331 private vehicles were also damaged during the tragedy.
While the emotional toll from the losses cannot be easily remedied, affected vehicles with a valid comprehensive motor insurance will be able to claim damages from their insurance providers without the need for a special perils add-on (for natural disasters), which will hopefully alleviate some of the financial burden as a result of the gas pipeline explosion.
All comprehensive motor insurance in Malaysia provide coverage against losses or damages to the vehicle caused by accidental fire or theft, as part of their standard policy. However, for vehicles with third-party car insurance, check your policy if Fire and Theft coverage is included. These policies are usually branded “Third Party Fire and Theft”.
Those affected by the fire are advised to contact their insurers as soon as possible. In response to the fire, the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) has issued a statement stating that insurance providers will work to expedite claims for affected vehicles and properties.

“We recognise the emotional and financial toll this tragic event has had on families and business owners. Our industry is committed to making the claims process as smooth as possible, ensuring policyholders receive the assistance they need,” said PIAM chairman Ng Kok Kheng.
“We are anticipating a large number of claims as property and vehicle owners begin to head back to the affected area and are prepared to support them every step of the way,” Ng added.
