The Penang government has pledged a total of 600 EV charging bays (EVCB) to be fully operational in the state by the end of the year, reports Bernama. Currently, there are 344 active EVCBs in Penang, already surpassing 50% of its goal.
Penang State Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye said that 300 of the planned 600 EVCBs will be situated in the Penang City Council (MBPP), and the remaining 300 will be situated within the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) administrative areas.
Currently, Penang Island has a total of 344 active ECVBs, consisting of 264 AC chargers and 80 DC fast chargers. H’ng said of the existing number of ECVBs, 261 are provided by the private sector.
The MBPP has also previously carried out a Request for Proposal (RFP) process for 52 EV chargers, that have now been installed at 26 locations on Penang Island. These council-built chargers are expected to be fully operational by next month, once electricity has been supplied by TNB.
Additionally, H’ng said MBPP is currently in the process of implementing the second phase of the RFP for the installation of an additional 50 ECVBs at 27 locations by December.
“MBPP has conducted a study on the location of EVCBs on the island area and due to the space constraints, existing parking lots would be used for the purpose, including at the MBPP complex parking area, as well as ‘on-street-parking’ to provide access to the public,” H’ng said.

The 600 EVCB target, announced yesterday, is in line with PLANMalaysia’s targeted distribution as part of the federal government’s plan for 10,000 EV chargers in Malaysia by the end of 2025.
Right now, Malaysia has a cumulative total of 3,611 EV chargers spread across the nation, with 4,299 proposed chargers yet to be built. Despite the aggressive push needed to achieve that number, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz says that Malaysia is on track to fulfil that number of charging stations by December.
