Volkswagen has announced the development of an affordable fully-electric (EV) model, with prices targeted to start at EUR20,000 (approx. RM92k).
Sounds good? Well, the bad news is that the new entry-level EV appears to be aimed exclusively at the European market, with Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand CEO, Thomas Schäfer, stating that it will be an affordable electric Volkswagen “from Europe for Europe.”
A preview image (top of the page) provided by the German automotive giant suggests that the upcoming affordable EV will draw inspiration from the Volkswagen UP!, a small city car that was discontinued in 2023.
A pre-production preview model of the upcoming EV model will be presented to the public by March 2025, although the actual market launch of the production version is only scheduled for 2027.

This upcoming EV is part of Volkswagen’s new electric small car family, developed under the Volkswagen Group’s Brand Group Core umbrella. It includes the previously-announced ID.2all, which is expected to debut in 2026 at a base price of under EUR26,000 (approx. RM119k).
Schäfer also emphasised the importance of the Wolfsburg plant in Germany for the carmaker’s electric future. The plant will produce the next-generation electric Volkswagen Golf, based on the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), alongside an EV version of the Volkswagen T-Roc.
While the brand’s future looks exciting, Volkswagen could still be facing a difficult 2025 ahead, as it does not have any new EV models planned for 2025, amidst dwindling sales.
