The Porsche 911 might remain a petrol-powered model for the foreseeable future, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be ignoring electrification completely. The new 2024 992.2 Carrera GTS is already a hybrid, and according to Porsche Chief Financial Officer and deputy chairman Lutz Meschke, the 911 Turbo will be the next to follow suit, due to make its debut some time next year.
The news was revealed in the brand’s Q3 2024 earnings call with investors, and while no details have been announced yet, Meschke did say that like the GTS, the Porsche 911 Turbo Hybrid will also employ batteries from Varta – the German battery maker of which Porsche is a part-owner.
In the Carrera GTS, those lithium-ion cells amount to 1.9 kWh in capacity, which help boost the max output from the 3.6-litre turbocharged flat-six engine up to 541 hp and 640 Nm of torque (54 hp and 150 Nm from the motor), enough to propel it to 100 km/h from a standstill in just three seconds flat.
We are expecting a majority of the GTS’ “T-Hybrid” system to also make its way into the upcoming 992.2 Porsche 911 Turbo, although we’re unsure about the engine. The current Porsche 911 Turbo boasts a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat six engine underneath its rear deck offering 580 hp and 750 Nm, though rumours have suggested the upcoming 992.2 model to utilise a modified version of the GTS’ 3.6-litre turbo with outputs bumped up to over 600 hp.

According to Meschke, the battery cells are currently in their “industrialisation process”, which means they should be ready for mass production just in time for when the new Porsche 911 GTS hit the market, ahead of the introduction of the upcoming 911 Turbo Hybrid.
Porsche has recently revised its plans for 80% of its line-up to be battery-electric by 2030, with the final 20% left specifically for its iconic 911 sports car. Aside from the Taycan, the all-new second-generation Porsche Macan is also now a fully electric model, and is set to go on sale in Malaysia very soon following its preview earlier this year. Order books for the all-new Porsche Macan is now already open, with prices starting at RM430,000.
