BYD Malaysia assures customers – Local cars not affected by recall

Sime Darby Motors Malaysia, the official distributor of BYD in Malaysia, assures customers in a statement that vehicles sold in the country are not affected by the recall exercise in China involving nearly 97,000 vehicles.

According to a report by Car News China, the recall is centred around a manufacturing defect in the electric power steering column assembly controller in the Chinese market Yuan Plus (known as the Atto 3) and Dolphin. Micro-cracks may appear on the capacitors once the equipment tool cover is installed, potentially posing a fire risk.

To mitigate this risk, BYD is instructing dealers to install insulation pads on the controller of affected vehicles free of charge. This measure effectively eliminates the safety hazard.

Given that this recall exclusively affects BYD models sold in China and not Malaysia. It is possible that this issue is specific to left-hand drive vehicles and not right-hand drive vehicles sold in Malaysia, considering the difference in components used.

It is important to note that all BYD models sold in Malaysia are directly imported CBU units from China. However, Sime Darby Motors Malaysia emphasises that this recall does not affect any vehicles sold locally.

In their statement, Sime Darby Motors Malaysia said, “As the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, Sime Darby Motors would like to reassure our valued customers that the BYD models sold in Malaysia are not affected by the recent recall announcement by BYD in China as it is limited exclusively to vehicles sold in the China market.”
